Juicebox install

Got my JuiceBox installed over the weekend. I went with the 40 instead of the 32 because they were the same price. Hardwired model. The electrician used a 40 amp breaker on it since he knew I would be using it with a 4xe. I'm debating if I should call him back to swap the 40a breaker for a 50a breaker or if I should just leave it be.

Any pros/cons to keeping the 40a or swapping in the 50a if I'm only planning on using it for the Wrangler 4xe for the time being? I have already updated the Maximum Capacity setting in the app from 40a to 32a. Also flipped the breaker a few times for various lengths of time to see if the setting is retained. It is.

If I understand the question correctly, you want to know the pro/con for installing a 50a where a 40a currently resides. If so, pros would be obvious, more capable draw for x purpose. Cons would be what your build could sustain and if so what duration before total meltdown/smoke/fire. Point of the breaker is a safety margin/insurance prior to that (but you already know that). Only your use case/s will point to the best answer for you.

Thanks. My only use case right now is to charge a 4xe. I could have went with the JuiceBox32 on a 40a breaker. I'm assuming the JuiceBox40 would just operate as a JuiceBox32 if it's on a 40a breaker and has the max capacity turned down to 32a. Or I could get the 50a breaker installed, leave the max capacity at 40a, and the 4xe would automatically adjust to its max charging capacity of 32a. My home is a newer build (2021) with 150 amp service and plenty of room in the panel. The electrician said the 50a breaker wouldn't be an issue, but now I'm wondering why he didn't just install it to begin with. Maybe he just didn't have one with him and knew I only needed 32a to charge. I'll have to give him a call back.

I have the same charger and ran a 50A line to future proof for myself (if only a little). That being said, it offers no real benefit right now. If I had gone with 40A instead I wouldn't bother upgrading.

Could have come down to cost and safety margin really, the electrician would have to weigh out both. I agree with dbp512, should be fine as is.

I did the same - installed a 50a outlet and plugged the JuiceBox 40a charger into it. Perfect set up for me...

I'm leaning towards swapping the 40a breaker for a 50a breaker, putting the JuiceBox settings back to the 40a default, and letting the 4xe do the work to max itself at 32a. It's a hardwired install so there's no extra wiring to a plug that would need to be replaced. The installer did tell me it'd be fine, but then still went ahead with the 40a breaker install. Might have to confirm with a different electrician too just to be safe. I know how to swap a breaker myself, but I don't know how to confirm whether or not the panel would be overloaded. Don't want to have to worry about it if I ever have a visitor with an EV that is capable of using the 40a max or if I get another vehicle in the future.

Make sure the installed wire gauge is correct! If it is anything less than 6AWG stick with the lower rated breaker.

The only wiring I'm aware of is the power cable that came connected to the JuiceBox40. It's hardwired into the panel. The whip had 3 wires on it. Pretty sure he just attached one to the ground in the panel and the other two to the breaker.

Here are pictures of my panel. The outdoor panel has the main shut off, a 30a breaker for a hot tub, and a 20a breaker for an irrigation controller and some outdoor outlets.

The panel in the garage is fed from the main panel outside. The JuiceBox is on the 40a breaker that's on the top left.

If it is the hardwired version there would be no benefit to a 50amp. If you had the NEMA 14-50 receptacle wired in I could see using a welder or something, but in this case I would stick with what you have.?

Just leave it at a 40 amp. You will never use more than 32 amps. So, 40 amp is safe.

What does the Juicebox call for? If it's capable of 40A charging and needs a 50A breaker to do so, then it needs to be a 50A breaker. Anything less is "unsafe" , as who's to say someone won't flip it into 40A mode and try to charge a different vehicle with it that's capable of 40A charging.

It's sort of like never changing wire gauge in a run, or never putting a larger subpanel breaker on a smaller supply breaker. If a device is capable of a certain capacity then it needs to be properly wired for that max capacity.

Thanks. I swapped the 50a breaker in last night. For those of you running JuiceBox40 on your 4xe, do you still set the JuiceBox to Max 32A or do you let the vehicle make the adjustment?
