If it were available now, would you order a JL Retractable Sunshade?

Hey all,

I continually mention this to our aftermarket team for you so it does not fall off the radar, however there is still no ETA on it. Sorry :(

How about if we all email [email protected] and tell them we want the retractable sunshade for the JL. Would that help?

I'm not holding my breath.

If I find one from a JK cheap enough, I'm going to buy it and adapt it. I'll be sure to post what needed changed so you all can make your own too.

How about offer them as a special order. The lead time is longer and the cost may be a little more but would be a nice option.

Thoughts?

That’s a great idea. A non-stock item. Do production runs, prepaid only.

Could be an idea. But kind of group buy with special price break and longer delay. Lets say if 15 are ordered price is $xx, if 20 price is $xx, 25 and so on....

Most likely they don't want to dedicate the personnel to develop it. The problem is, I don't think the JK shade is a huge seller, so they don't see the profit in making one for the JL. Without a big enough profit margin, they're not going to waste the time on R&D for a JL version. If they don't develop it, they won't be able to offer special orders.
Once they've worked out the minor design changes for the JL from the JK it would be easy to produce shades at/around the same cost as the JK version. If it's ever available from BestTop it's likely to be an off the shelf item.

As far as I can tell, the R&D is done.

Looks at this video from last year:

It starts at 11:43. It should start there automatically.

Maybe another manufacturer will fullfill the need?

Yeah I saw that video a while back, which is why I assumed they'd be available by now. I guess that since they haven't released it, they hadn't fully tested it. Much like the J6, I fear this is something can obviously be done, but for some reason isn't. Both seems would sell but I guess not in large enough quantities to come to market. Dumb. Why design it if you won't make it available. :swear:

And it's nit like the JL and JT is going to vanish next year! They will be there for couple years!

Crazy! I had no idea, thanks for the heads up.

Someone else mentioned the JK version flapped too much in the wind, I wonder if they're struggling with that here, too

Other than that, anyone know why the JK version wasn't a hot seller? I installed an Alien copy (Voodonala) and just couldn't stand it being there all the time. Retractable is a have your cake 'n eat it scenario...

One way to improve the flapping issue is to tighten the torsion spring that rolls the shade back. Another thing that would help is to somehow secure the shade closer to the corners rather than at the stock latch locations. Neither of these would be particularly difficult to do, but would take a little experimenting to get it right.
If I find one to adapt, I'll not only look into making it fit, but to reduce/eliminate any flapping. I hadn't heard that was an issue, so I'll see if I can remedy that too.

I tried to get the measurements on the JK version of the retractable from Cassie / Bestop for months, to see if the mounting points would line up with the JL or whether I might be able to modify it to fit. Finally gave up after repeated requests. Very frustrating.

If anyone has a JK version and could provide those measurements here (distance between the mounting holes and the distance between the hooks on the front of the screen), that would be great.

I had the same thoughts. Those holes should be easy enough to slot if they're close to the JL's locations. The hooks will be even easier still to relocated if needed. I also had a thought on fabricating some new hooks that latch at the corners rather than at the Freedom panel latch locations.

Another thing I'm curious about is how wide is the shade portion? More specifically the housing for it. Meaning, will it fit between the frame of the JL's sunrider top?
