I live in Northwest Arkansas and I get waves back from 80-90% of Wrangler/CJ drivers here. I also travel to Colorado a few times a year and I have noticed that I only get waves 30-40% of the time out there. I have always figured it was just Colorado snobs not wanting to wave at a Jeep with Arkansas tags.

People wave in CO just not in the city.

I never wave in the city unless someone waves at me. I pass seemingly 100's daily and none wave. However, if you get out of the city and into the mountain towns, mountain passes and roads that aren't I-70 or I-25 I wave 100% of the time and I'd say 90% do back.

Sometimes I am not sure if I am supposed to wave, but I do it anyway.
You are supposed to - don't worry, just wave.

Does anyone ever forget when they are driving their other car and wave? It's actually comical to see the confused looks.
Did that all the time when I had my JK, even after she gave up on me and I got the F-250. For a short while I reflexively waved at other SuperDuty drivers, but none of them waved back... Heck, most of them were driving company trucks

I waved in my lifted LJ and will wave in my stock JL. Just the friendly thing to do.

The friendly level has dropped off in more than just the Jeep wave in Colorado. I noticed that while riding or running on the trails, I get fewer friendly replies. People just seem to be more and more big city closed off and weary. So much fear propaganda fed to us daily, is it any wonder? I'll still say hello. :dunno:

Hello all!

Ok Wrangler owners in CO what gives......my brother-in-law (whom had a JKUS) and the dealer told me to wave at other Wrangler owners to be part of this exclusive Jeep wave movement......only no one seems to care.

This is my first Wrangler and I'm trying to uphold the high standards bestowed upon me but seriously I think my chances of getting a wave back have been far less than 50%.

Sooooo, is there just too many Wranglers in CO and so no one cares anymore or did my brother-in-law and dealer set me up to be on some TV show that has morons waving at passing Jeeps????????
I lived in Colorado north of Denver for nearly 10 years starting around 1994, and nearly all my fellow CJ owners waved. Same thing living in Chicagoland area. I don't recall getting as many waves from Wrangler owners, but then to be fair I didn't always notice or wave at them. I can't say today if people are still doing it, because what happened to all the CJs? Hardly see any here now in Chicagoland. Rust?!

Probably with a CJ owner, you really got to want to have one of those and probably work on it, it's typically not going to be something you just go out and buy. So there is maybe a certain comradery and appreciation between owners of seeing one on the road.

Similar thing with older 4x4s actually. I recall driving on i290 leaving Chicago one day, and a Scout 800 owner drove up beside me and was giving thumbs up to my 1970 CJ-5. I had the weird half cab on my CJ-5 that day, and probably the CJ and his older gen Scout were the two most interesting and odd looking vehicles on the road that day, lol. So you got to give each other props.

I wave at all wranglers. I don't wait for them wave first because my LJ is older. I don't only wave at lifted/topless/muddy/doorless/whatever jeeps. I figure that the tide of boring, same-old-same-old vehicles is always rising, and wranglers are an island. The more people we can get to realize that our island has a community; that we wave to each other, park next to each other, (in my case two weekends ago, write an appreciative note and leave it on a windshield), and admire each other's rigs, the better. Hopefully, a few people who see the wave will come online to learn a bit more about their jeep. Maybe, they will see something that they can add that makes their jeep better for them - be it bigger wheels, new bumpers and a winch, or a better way to manage soccer and hockey bags.
Amen to that ! :)

As a resident of South Denver:

I will definitely wave 100% of the time to a modified Wrangler
I will wave 100% of the time to 2 doors (if I see it)
I will wave 100% to CJ's, YJ's, TJ's.
I will wave 100% of the time if they have their top down/off
If it is a 4 door, stock Sport, driven by a soccer mom, I wave 50% of the time (they rarely wave back)

I mention Denver because this is the perfect Jeep territory. Strong 4x4 for the winter months. Small SUV to find easier parking. Freedom tops (which soccer mom's rarely take off), removable top, etc. Too many are not "Jeep People," and never hit the trails.

Why wave?, some may ask! While getting on the freeway yesterday I noticed a “YJ” on the side with a man standing next to it. I had to get off at next exit, get back on freeway for two exits, and then back on. My Jeeper friend had left by then. Dare I ask, how many vehicles have you ever owned that someone will stop just because of what you drive? There are a few..., VERY FEW. I don’t really get offended if they don’t wave back.
Funny but true: I have been caught waving at a jeep while driving a fire truck!

Well,I grew up in Southeast MO and traipsed all over the Mississippi River hills and the Ozarks. We grew up with those driving trucks and Jeeps both giving a "Wave." And, when driving on gravel roads, a "Wave" was a "Given" no matter what the vehicle. In '89-90 we moved to Colorado. I'm used to the standard truck "Wave," so I waved. No reciprocation in the small town we lived in, none in the country, none in the cities, none on the few gravel roads I found. I thought it strange and unfriendly? Go figure? Been out west several times since, we bypass Colorado.

As for here in the Ozarks, the rural "Wave," is alive and well! Be it truck, Jeep, or whatever you drivel. Of course, most of the urbanites just give us a suspicious "Look" when we wave, wondering if they're about to hear banjo music (LOL)!

Unfortunately, the Jeep Waves started to diminish with the introduction of the JK Unlimited. The Jeep CJ and Wrangler used to be driven by people with similar personalities. They were people who appreciated the rugged, go-anywhere, do anything Jeep lifestyle. The JK Unlimited opened the door to the average-minded person, who may not be as aware of the world around them. They probably don't even notice you as you pass by. Keep waving though- It's the right thing to do.
Cliché much ?
It’s been a while since I hadn’t heard a « true jeep / mall crawler / soccer mom » type of comment, but I guess they never get old eh ?!

I'm not going to wave unless I know the person, doesn't matter which vehicle I'm driving. Maybe it will change once I get the Jeep...
