Used to see a lot of jeeps with a Eugene the Jeep sticker or mascot. Still a few on the forums here.

As much as I love this theory, it seems the original reason everyone settled on calling it a "jeep" has been lost in time. (Like tears, in rain) But it seems that the two popular frontrunners for the name are Eugene the Jeep, or the "GP" designation in WWII, shortened to 'jeep'. (Like how HMMWV became Humvee)

Nobody really knows, but it is fun digging through the history of what has become such a popular civilian automobile.

P.S. For some reason I thought that this post was related to Shoggy, the seldom dog.

I'm not giving much credence to anything that thinks 1941 was WW I.
That was just a horribly awkward sentence. I think they were trying too hard to tie WWI, Popeye, WWII, and jeeps all together.

That article is mostly cut-and-paste click-bait though.

Anyone reading this post, look up the history, it is plenty interesting reading.
