The wife and I are Tillamook Oregon now. I am not used to having a permit to go off road. In south eastern states I have never had one. However I have learned to check. And even though we got permits for Washington and Montana. You also need one in Oregon to do as much as turn onto a dirt road.

So, yesterday I tried to get one but I have zero service here at the RV park. This is only the second place I have had zero service. The BOH app. Lists a ranger station. So I told the wife let's just head towards the trail and stop at the ranger station. Well they don't sell permits at the ranger station, and again no service.

I decided to hit the trail anyway because it was 30 miles back to town where I can get service. I told the wife on the way back we will go into Tillamook and get a permit, hopefully if we get service there.

So we find cedar tree trail and after a short distance we come to a main road. And what do we find? A sheriff sitting right there standing outside of his truck waiting on us to come out. In all the places I have off roaded I have yet to run into a ranger of a sheriff.

Of course the first thing he asks for is the permit. I politely explained that I had no service at the RV park. Showed him the brochure the ranger station gave me and told him I had tried like six times to log on and get a permit. He said well I am still giving you a ticket. I said yes sir, I understand.

Then he walks back and looks at my plate, (Florida )asks for my license. Steps back about two steps and is looking at the jeep. He says I see you got a few BOH badges on the fender, I said yes sir working on getting a few.

He says you know this is a BOH trail are you logged in. I said yes but no service, so it will go through when it can. Then he says, looks like your lifted about two inches with 33s. I said yes sir, exactly. He said my jeep has the same set up and I have made both the BOH trails up here. Then proceeded to give me directions to the next trail.

Then he says, I tell you what, when you get to the top you will have service. Log in up there and get the permit. I said yes sir.

Hands me my license and says have a nice day and be safe.

Jeep brother, whooo hooo. Lol.

"Permit to turn onto a dirt road"????

I drive all over southeastern Oregon on dirt roads. No one yet has asked me for a permit...and if they do, I'm gonna raise some hell. These are PUBLIC roads.

I'm glad you got what you needed but the story in general just pisses me off.

I forget exactly what it stated but yes, it basically stated if you go off pavement anywhere you need a permit. Kinda like better to have and not need than the opposite.

Sorry it pisses some people off. The permit is $10 for a year, and all funds collected go back on the ground to keep trails clear and safe for people to go off road.

If anything pisses me off it's that you can't fix stupid. Just like Florida and other places people continue to ride dirt bikes and ATVs with zero protective gear. Shorts and tenni shoes.

Talked with a few locals. Life flight and paramedics/ambulance's are out there all the time and it is almost always the people with no riding gear getting hurt. STUPID!!!!

Thank you for reporting this about Oregon. I have a Jeep in Montana and you do NOT need a permit for a highway legal Jeep. The permits are for ATV's and side by sides and the like. Here is the Montana law:

https://fwp.mt.gov/activities/off-highway-vehicles

Oregon law DOES include Jeeps, saying: Vehicles that have an unrestricted license plate are allowed to drive most gravel roads that are open to passenger vehicles, without needing an ATV Permit. They are required to have an ATV Permit when they leave the road, such as operating on trails or the dunes.

Thanks for the clarification. I was going to look it up more closely, but, almost know service. It takes like 10 min. Get a post on here.

Places are starting to blend together these days. Montana permit might have been for glacier national Park.

Can't remember, but there was another state we needed a permit.

I guess the other point would be, like it or not check your local state laws if your traveling and going off road.

Are there signs on the trails saying anything about a permit? Without reading this thread I'd never know a permit was required in Oregon. Permit is $10, what would the ticket fine be?

Moral of the story, I need to get a few stinking badges...
I really wasn't wanting to start that trend on my jeep. I don't need proof but I don't even know how to go about doing that.

Good on Johnny Law for understanding. I didn't get the same result at a snowmobile trail last winter.

If I remember right there may have been a sign when you first make the turn off, and they have some bigger boards showing maps, fire danger, etc. And it mentions permits on these also.

As far as the trails went some were marked just fine, some the sign was not legible anymore, and some the sign is missing. Imagine they fix them eventually. As far as the BOH trails, they are both hard to find.

Just download the app. And start checking it out. For me I don't need proof either. I think for most it's just fun, and free, so why not.
