I'll revive this thread from the dead with a note.
I have a fairly new liftmaster garage door opener, clearly a rolling code version. Could not get the first step to complete where you hold down the button in the Jeep and the remote at the same time. Replaced the batteries. Tried many combinations of pressing the remote button every 10 seconds etc. Tried holding at different distances. Nothing.
Finally I went to our other car and used that remote. Worked straight away. So there is some magic with the remotes - the one what worked was branded liftmaster so probably is original. The one that did not work was a generic no name amazon remote. Works fine to open and close the door, but some some reason homelink does not like it.
Programming the gate was the same too - generic remote did not work, liftmaster remote worked straight away.
I are not going to spent the time to work out why, but through that this might help some other folks.
