It looks like soft-tops and convertible cars have this as a frequent setup. Hardtop cars don't. So yes, there is a risk. walking across the street is a risk, but that risk varies: Crossing in Carbondale, IL = Low Risk; Crossing in New York City - Higher Risk.
So you can decide for yourself. Making the change I showed above was easy for me. If you're not comfortable with wiring and cutting wires, then maybe this 'mod' isn't for you.
