Well agree to disagree. I think you're naively remembering an alternate reality version of the internet that never actually existed. Google has been making money off you since 2000 when paid advertising was introduced and determining what you see in search results based an algorithm that earns them the most money. Prior to the introduction of HTML in the early 90s it was a slow, clunky mess. I remember it well.Quite wrong on this one.
The internet was filled with useful information and how-to stuff long before people figured out how to monetize every little pixel they displayed.
No argument commercialization and loss of privacy is worse now, but the direct benefits that have come from it have exponentially improved access, content quality and user experience. The only other option would be for users to pay the actual costs of the internet. Everything would have a cost - paying a fee to use Google all the way to a subscription for every website. Is that what you're proposing? That's just fantasy...
