In 1980 VW came out with the new Bus. The Vanagon. The Bus was notoriously unsafe in both type 1 and type 2 configurations in previous years from 1949-1979. When the NHTSA tested the new Vanagon they slammed it into a wall as they do now. A useless test that should be considered obsolete by now. They gave it poor ratings. However, when an independent agency did their own videos recordings using dummies, a Vanagon was tested slamming into several Volvo models head on at 50mp. the Volvo driver and passenger dummies were destroyed and the Vanagon driver and passengers were unscathed. Later, almost 10 years went by, and actual insurance injury claims on the Vanagon were the 3rd lowest of any of 273 vehicle models on the road in the USA. That said, the 2 current wall crash tests are utterly useless in real world data and have no business being used as a rating for safety. That was an incompetent test then and even more so now. Scientifically useless. Enough said.
