Idler pulley failed and left me stranded on the side of the road. So today after 4 parts stores I was able to get all four and replaced them all while I was in there. Also a new belt. Pulling the alternator off makes it easier to get to the other pulleys, the tensioner is far easier to loosen if pulled downward from under the Jeep and I cleaned up the front of the timing cover while i was in there. So much dirt.

Shoot, you are almost to the "while I'm here" phase and replace the timing chain, guides and water pump!

Kind of reminds me of the water pump on my 5.7L Hemi Charger R/T. Bearing failed and left my wife stranded on the side of the road while I was out of state.

Dealer tried to ding her $900 to replace it along it with a huge list of unnecessary stuff using the 'woman tax' as I like to call it. Besides the water pump they wanted to replace the radiator "because it had been overheated". WTF? How do you overheat the radiator?!!!! That pissed me off so I showed up with a truck and trailer and brought it home.

Total bill would have been over $2K, but I fixed it myself. I replaced the water pump, idler pulleys, tensioner, and serpentine belt with parts totaling just over $250 from Rock Auto.

Unless it's a warranty repair, my Jeep ain't going to the dealer!

Yeah it wasn’t all that bad to replace just had to go to multiple parts stores to get all the pulleys. I could have just replaced the one that failed. I’m on my 3 radiator now and have changed the oil cooler. so I’m definitely getting experience on this engine bay.

Ironically just had a similiar failure come into the shop with a similiar idler pulley failure two weeks ago. Engine bay was also covered in mud like yours.

I suspect running through mud puddles causes ingress into the ball bearings resulting in failure. Strongly suggest people power wash down their pulleys after going through mud puddles!

When I first started off roading I enjoyed splashing through a good mud puddle, now I avoid them like the plague. But that Wyoming mud is on a whole other level.

Not only that, but replace the failing parts when the start making noise, not when they break and put you on the side of the highway.

Got a video to use for the oil cooler swap? Did any considerable coolant or oil come out when removing the cooler? I’m about to try this soon.
Thanks

I watched several videos on YouTube. I would have to go back and look to see which one I used most. Lost about a quart of oil and not much coolant. Make sure to get a inch pound torque wrench

Yes, it makes a hell of a mess. You should change the oil after replacement.

Thanks. Will do. Think a gallon of 50/50 Mopar coolant will be enough? Any air pockets after top off?
