I suck at Drones. Anyone else using one while offroading?

I bought a drone to capture the trails and campsites I’ve come to love. Let’s just say there is a large gap between the expectation and reality of what I can do with it. Before I sign up for a drone based forum filled with a bunch of dorks has anyone else mastered one or found a knowledge base focused on Jeep photography?

Here’s me hitting a tree for laughs:

LOL.. I bring my teenager along and let them fly it while I drive. They are so good at video games it comes very naturally to them.

My son had drones starting in Jr High and by high school announced that I crashed too many times and wasn’t allowed to fly any of his drones even if I bought them for him. I got good at rebuilding them but sucked at flying them 🤷

This is the DJI Mini Pro 4 with the auto track feature, it still hits trees. This is the expectation vs reality gap I was referring to.

I almost bought that same DJI, so did some research. If you run in "sport" mode it turns off the collision avoidance feature.

I have the DJI Mini 4 Pro model. My main issue is remembering to charge it and bring it with me.
Sport mode will allow it to keep up at faster speeds but turns off the collision avoidance system so best used in open areas, flown above obstacles or in manual control.

I have flown DJI drones for 10 years. If you get a good one with obstacle avoidance and the follow me feature you can do damn near anything. At the very least a Mavic series will serve you well. Just to many people expect pro results from an underpriced cheap drone.

So on the Mini 4 Pro using Active track on a vehicle is there a way to keep the altitude of the drone much lower? The preset altitude for Active track is where I keep getting in trouble; it's at the exact height as the smaller branches of the tree tops and at a shit camera angle too.

No... you have to set the height when you start and it will maintain that height. I usually set it for above the tree lines and then I come in close in post edit.

I fly a Ruko F11 Pro 2. A very good “budget” drone. It does not have obstacle avoidance; I did tons of research on that. Obstacle avoidance works well with large, solid obstacles - not tree branches.

I haven’t tried “follow me” while driving yet. When I do, if I am alone, I will set the altitude to avoid collisions. If I’m with someone else, I will teach them on flying it first, and have them maintain the altitude.

Even if I am alone and the altitude is set to a safe level, the resolution is so good you can zoom-in during editing to make it appear lower.
