Going over my jeep now that spring is coming so i can take stock of repairs. Ive found some corrosion issues. The windshield I knew of and debated either repainting it or even a bed-liner (figured it might add some protection from branches and kill 2 birds 1 stone.

now i see it on the doors and what look like seems on the rear. The doors seem like the same type of corrosion as the windshield but the rear seems to be regular rust just starting.

what is the best way forward here? Im not knowledgeable on body work, especially aluminum so i thought id ask here before calling shops so id have at least a general idea on solutions so i wont get snake oiled as easily.

Am i looking at needing to consider full on paint work? Or is this a spot treatment sort of thing? And how do I prevent more/it returning?

If the edge seams are bubbling, there is no long term fix. The affected door, hood etc would need to be replaced. If it’s around the hinge, it most likely can be repaired. You might be able to slow the progress by replacing the hinges and sealing the raw aluminum and repairing the adjacent bubbling point. Overall it is a very expensive endeavor for not a lot of assurance that it won’t come back. I replaced all my hinges and sealed the raw aluminum, and sprayed cavity wax in all the edge seams to try and prevent it. It’s all crap shoot. Anywhere raw aluminum is under a hinge is a problem and the poor production process at the factory causes the edge seams to corrode

I had my '19 JLUR doors (bottom edges and hinges) and hood (edges) repaired twice while it was still under the paint warranty. I believe I'm on my 3rd year post warranty and I'm beginning to see bubbling reappear on the bottom driver side door. (at 63K miles)

That would be on the hood where it curves and hits the fender, the bottom of the doors and tailgate

What’s the year of your jeep? If your in the 5 year window I’d take it up with jeep and have them fix it. It’s a known issue so if you’re in the window I’d do that. If not…different story.

How do I handle the corrosion there? Sand it off, spray it with a treatment, then paint it, is my thought. but im not sure if im correct.

Yeah, that’s all you can do. The inside edge seam is probably where it started and then eats its way to the exterior painted surface. There really isn’t a great way to address the interior edge seam. You could try some anti corrosive sprayed into the interior of the door, followed by some cavity wax to eliminate the oxygen from reacting with the aluminum. Maybe try one door, and see if it comes back. I know they are starting to sell steel hoods for the jl, maybe steel doors are not too far off. For the exterior, it’s just sand prime and paint. I’m not sure what I’ll do when it happens, not willing to shell out thousands of dollars just to have it return…. I did replace all the hinges and seal the raw aluminum to stop it there, but the edge seams are a whole different animal

I was referring more to the actual orange rust on the tailgate section. The bubbling is not ideal, but from my understanding, at its worst, it'll just be an unsightly surface discolouration, but not actual rot. I'm worried about the rear as I'd like to stomp it out ASAP before it gets a chance to grow into anything else, like the cancerous rot the salt belt is known for.

So I take it this is basically guaranteed to happen? 52k on my 21. Only spot I could find is on the hood in the pic below and it’s small. Hinges and doors all look fine, for now.
