Following this thread, reading many options and decided to buy the Mopar receiver.

Following this post I found your and others recommendations for the 68251844AB hitch. I went to the dealer to buy it too. I need no wiring since I just need the hitch for my bike rack. So it was great to have the Mopar for 80 bucks. No hardware though, Then I went to Home Depot but they they don't have the fine thread. So I installed the hitch reusing the 2 bolts already there. Where did you bought the other two needed?
I just picked some up from my local dealership.

I did the same thing. My local lowes had them in the speciality bolts drawers. Look at the photo and you should be able to check inventory to your local store with the part number. I purchased the bolts, lock washers, and put loctite on the bolts.

Has anyone who does not have the factory tow package installed an electric trailer brake controller yet? I've installed the MOPAR 7-way harness, which provides the blue wire for the feed for the trailer brakes, and I'm aware that the red and black wires for the brake controller will go to the hot & ground on the battery, however, I'm unable to find a trigger/feed wire for the actual brake controller itself. On my JK, it was a brown/white wire (4 wires running to brake pedal switch). On my JL, there are only 3 wires running to the brake pedal switch, and none of them have 12 volts going to them, regardless of whether the brake pedal is pressed or not.

Anyone have any ideas?
Any luck?

@brandonh may be able to help? I think he had access to wiring diagrams.

Mine is done it took about 4 hours. The blue wire took awhile to figure out too. Yes it is for a trailer brake controller. It would have been nice for them to put that in the instructions. I wasted about 45 minutes on that and the red wire that goes to the control module mine was taped up pretty good along the harness it took awhile to figure that out I couldn’t see it.

So, question for you. I’m getting ready to buy a brake controller and installed my own harness. I know the white wire is ground, black is 12 volt power, blue is output to the trailer brakes, and red is input from the brake switch. What are connecting the red wire to?

I’m sorry do you have the wiring diagram? The red wire I remember went to the control module.

There’s a red wire that goes to the control module that is housed in the passenger tail light area that is part of the tow harness, but what red wire attaches to the brake controller?

The only wire I know of that goes to a brake controller is the blue one. When you get the brake controller post the wiring diagram and I’ll look it over.

There is a red wire that goes to the harness at the brake pedal. I’ll post photos when I install.

For those wiring up their own brake controller because you didn’t get the tow package, where are you getting power from?

Here’s the wiring diagram.

The red wire to the controller just needs to be hooked up to the brake light circuit. It shows it being hooked up after the stop lamp switch. You would just need a test light to find out which one of the wires gets battery voltage once the brake pedal is depressed. And tap into the circuit.
