...or it gets hijacked!!

Love you guys. Got it working. Gave it a bit more of an adjustment and things firmed up a little. I'm not going to touch it ever again.

FYI, 16 inches of 3/8 socket extenders does the trick to break the loctite.

Day wasn't a total waste, at least the Cowboys lost.

Paint stripper with methylene chloride will break the red loctite free, as will heat >550 F. I don’t know if you can buy just the set screw to replace yours or if you’re SOL and have to get the whole steering gear box to replace it.

BTW, you’re completely right about getting a response. Granted probably few have tried and dealt with the repair for the wonky steering that you’re dealing with, but the trolling or legit criticism threads always seem to provoke more responses than anything else. Some of these guys jump to the defensive like you’ve insulted their grandma if you have any criticism of the JL, whether it’s legitimate or not. :giggle:
A little heat from a micro butane torch works great for this.

It's not a standard set screw. It actually has a button type thing on the inside that slots into the top of the sector shaft. This keeps gravity from pulling the shaft downward and binding the gears. This is why it stops when you try to screw it out.

Anyhow, if you have an older steering box, chances are adjusting the lash won't help. The factory adjustment was probably fine. This has been confirmed by multiple people who have tried adjusting the lash. The problem is either ball screw pre-load or out of spec gears.
