I just had my wife's Lexus in the shop for a check engine light. Turned out some critter had chewed through 3 wiring harnesses.

They like hoses too. I had one chew through the evap hose on my last Honda Accord.. First sign was the system advising to check the fuel cap. Second sign was when I topped off the fuel tank and it filled the cabin with fumes...

Rodents became a real issue when some rocket scientist decided that SOY based insulation would be a great ideašŸ™„. I could cheerfully throttle that moron. Garage called today, got the pump and wiring straightened out only to discover that the Fuel lines have multiple chew holes tat spray gas everywhere when the vehicle is started. Total repair cost is now over $1500😳 (and it had only been 3 days since it was last driven!). Good news is that comprehensive will pay all but my deductible ($500). Back when my old Scouts and even my TJ would often sit a couple weeks between being driven-never encountered any issues then…

Definitely a moronic decision to use rodent food in vehicles at all but especially in those that have a decent chance of being in the woods occasionally.

Do you have a garage you can park it in? If not look into spraying the harnesses down with cayenne pepper spray or peppermint oil...I can't say it works but that's what my Honda mechanic recommended....

About 2 years ago we had an orphaned baby squirrel that we, mostly my wife. Had in our shed with the one window so he could come and go as he pleased.
There is a lot of exposed wiring in there and he never took a bite out of any of them but my neighbor plinked one that was constantly sitting on top ot the tires of his Toyota pickup. His wife said it was so he was out of the weather and felt safe. LOL
Well a few weeks go by and he stops over and asked to borrow my snap on scanner, his dash was lit up like the usual christmas tree and it would not start. Mr squirrel decided that he would start at one end and work his way up into the engine bay. The truck pretty much needed a complete wire harness and without knowing it, from trying to start it the ECM and several other electronics fried.
He did not have insurance coverage and I think it was a little over $3000 to fix everything, and that was with him doing the work and hunting down the parts.
He used to complain about the 2 cats that always hung around and various neighbors would feed them. So he made the cats disappear like an asshole and then he paid the price for it. Kind of ironic
I did look into buying a mouse blocker system online
They have smart units that you can hook up and stay under your hood for $60 and the larger garage size one is $190 on Amazon. Cheap insurance is my reasoning for getting one. There are quite a few motorcycles, 2 snow blowers, power washer`s, My Jeep amongst other items they would munch on

Serve them an eviction notice by air mail via a pellet gun or if you have to go through all of the paperwork in your state to purchase a pellet gun you can always buy a Air Soft gun

Yes peppermint oil is something that they do not like at all, along with ammonia
Just read about soaking cotton balls in peppermint oil and placing them near entrances to you garage/house and to place them in numerous locations on your vehicle

Chili peppers and mint are common home remedies for keeping squirrels at bay, since they detest the taste and smell of both. You can whip up a spray concoction using one of the many recipes found online. If you prefer the grab-and-go approach, try a no-stink commercial repellent spray like rain-resistant TomcatĀ® Repellents Animal Repellent Ready-To-Use, which uses essential oils that create a smell and taste squirrels naturally hate. For large areas, get fast coverage by using TomcatĀ® Repellents Animal Repellent Granules. Be sure to follow all label directions.

Well just heard from the dealer-friggin tree rats have chewedup the wiring for the fuel pump! Wife says I can’t kill all the squirrels around here-I told her I can tryšŸ˜. Little varmints just cos me over $1000😔
Sorry to hear about that but this video may cheer you up and make you a bonafide ā€œSquirrel Exterminator.ā€ :) I’m sure there’s a jeep badge for that. If you kill enough of them, eat’em, they make great stew!

I’m thinking .22 LR myself (I love living in the country😊), though I do have an RWS 36 that’ll zip a .177 pellet at 1200 fps that I bought my Dad many years ago to solve his in town issue of whistlepigs in the gardenšŸ™„.
