I’ve driven two JLU Saharahs now, one had this issue, the other did not.

In one vehicle, people noted a distracting echo of their own voice when talking to me via hands free. I believe (from memory) that this happened over Bluetooth and also when using USB/CarPlay.

I could reduce the echo by turning the volume down to 5 or lower, at which point it was very hard for me to hear the person. I could also eliminate the echo by switching to my iPhone speakerphone or normal phone mic.

Has anyone else experienced this? I’m hoping it was a random issue/isolated to that vehicle... but I’m nervous that it’s related to Alpine/ANC/etc, as the vehicle that had the issue had Alpine and the issue that did not have the issue did not have Alpine.

In hopes of collecting objective data, please provide the following info:

•Phone type (iPhone, Android, etc)
•Phone OS (iOS 11, Android KitKat, etc)
•Echo over Bluetooth? (Yes/No)
•Echo over USB? (Yes/No)

My details:

•iPhone X
•iOS 11
•BT Echo - Yes
•USB Echo - Maybe (not 100% if I tested this when I had the demo)
This is not unique to the CarPlay and Uconnect (JL) system. There are tons of discussions group postings on the interwebs about this for years. This happens in Ford Sync without CarPlay too. It could be a combination of data and voice settings.

Data and voice settings.... on the phone? On the Uconnect?

I have to assume it’s on the UConnect, as I had the issue with my phone in one JL and not another.

I am also having this issue. I use my phone many times a day as I am in sales and have had many people telling me that it is echoing and is highly annoying. I have called in as well to my wife when she was driving it and I can confirm that it is! I have the Alpine System, tried both Bluetooth and Apple Car Play with my iPhone 7 and the result is the same. Called Uconnect and they said they haven’t heard of any issues like this and that there isn’t an update. I need to go to the dealership is what they told me. I turned off the LTE setting for voice on my phone to Data Only and it didn’t help. I have AT&T service. We need to stay on top of this.

Other interesting point is that 9 out of 10 times, the echo will go away at some point during the call. It varies and sometimes happens after 20 seconds to a few minutes as I am always asking, “do you still hear it”. When it clears up, the sound is very good on the other end.

I've had this issue as well.
  • iPhone 8
  • iOS 11.3.1
  • Alpine premium sound package - Yes
  • Issues on CarPlay - Yes
  • Issues on Bluetooth - Yes
Generally, the echo will fade away after a few minutes into the call but it really is quite annoying.

Agreed, we need to stay on top of this! Make sure to report to your dealers - the fact that we're hearing they haven't heard of this is not good. We won't get to the bottom of it unless we keep reporting it.

I believe earlier in the thread there are reports that the call is improved if done over BT and not over USB. Of course, music is better over USB, and for those with CarPlay, it only works over USB.

@thewolfman2010 - do you have the issue both via USB and BT?

One other general reminder - for anyone who experiences this, PLEASE report it to @JeepCares via a PM and also to your dealer.
Yep, I have this issue via USB and BT. Fun fact: my iPhone X was connected via USB and my radio crashed THREE times on my drive home (~20mins).

Woah that’s really bad. Have you tried a battery disconnect for a few minutes to force a hard reset on your radio?

I agree with this... was on the phone today and made the other end suffer through the echoing. They confirmed that it did go away after ~30 seconds.

Any chance it’s related to the noise canceling (feedback)...?

I am having the same echo issue with my JL rubicon, making talking on the phone impossible for business.

It sounds like the issues are largely related to the Alpine system. I am going tomorrow to have a faulty speaker replaced. It rattles loudly at 165 hz. The speakers on my sound bar also sound very cheap and I am no audiophile.

I am hoping that the echo issue will miraculously be solved once the blown speaker is addressed. It’s unfortunate that I’m already considering pulling out the entire audio system, especially after upgrading to the Alpine system. I’ve only had the vehicle 10 days!

Has @JeepCares responded to anyone on this? A friend of mine mentioned that, hey it’s Jeep what did you expect? I’ve had several wranglers and expected far less from them in the fit and finish department because they didn’t cost me $50,000

If the audio system is already having all these issues can you imagine The trouble that all of the locking systems in the electronic 4 x 4 system may have.

JeepCares is not going to comment on this issue with any information to an open thread. There are too many variables for them to make any blanket statement. Their role is to work as an agent between FCA and your Dealer to capture issues and help facilitate the process of getting issues taken care of.

If you are having this problem your best bet is to send them a direct message with your VIN and your dealers name as well as when you plan on making an appointment / going in. JeepCares will understandably not work individual issues on an open forum / thread.

Thanks for the info. Has anybody else fixed this issue?
