Edit: I do know one thing, ground camping will work in almost any situation, i always carry a small tent with me any time im offroading in case of emergency need
Like my RV, the JLR always rolls with light camping equipment for two. You never know...

I sometimes carry my 6 person tent, holds cot, chair, table and more, on the roof.

An RTT is better protection from bears.

And snakes, and scorpions, and ants, and wild donkeys, and random cattle...
Ha! It's only when I told my wife that scorpions can't climb ladders that she was suddenly all over getting our RTT!

(They can't climb ladders, can they?)

One of the scariest ground camping moments of my life was unzipping a tent (to check on alot of noise) and being face to face with a very pissed off free range bull. I have also had to chase a wild donkey all over the damn desert in the middle of the night after he hooked a lawn chair strap with a rear hoof and drug it off scared of the thing making noise behind him suddenly.

I will always pick a ground tent over a RTT.

Lower center of gravity.
Lighter.
Cheaper.
Can stand in a ground tent.
No slippery ladders, especially late at night, with dogs.
I can leave my tent at camp to offroad.
My tent doesn't need to be perfectly level.

The only benefit I see for RTT if there are large animals around, or venomous snakes.
