Do they go off the msrp new or used value of the vehicle?
Most likely the used value because if they total it they will use the value of it to auction it off. In this case the used value was greater than MSRP due to market conditions

If you have time, here's the story of AdventureDex who bought a rear-ended Wrangler and then set out to repair it.

.
I think there's something like 10 videos in the series? But it's quite detailed if you really really want to know what you're facing with being rear-ended.

WARNING: He can be an over-the-top bro, so if that's not your sort of thing, man, you need to go elsewhere.

I work for an insurance company and you are spot on. I'm guessing you work for one too.
Maybe this is good time to look at our policies. If someone hits you and they have the minimum coverage to drive in a state, that is what you have to work with. Say they have a policy that covers $25K for damage to the vehicle they plowed through, you may be fighting your insurance company to cover the rest. Purchase the underinsured motorist option to cover your ass. You would be surprised on the minimum policy requirements in your state. And on the other end, purchase a solid policy to cover your ass in the event you take out one, two, or three vehicles in one pass.

IF YOU ARE INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT WITH ANY FRAME DAMAGE, TAKE IT TO A JEEP DEALERSHIP WITH A BODY SHOP. YOU WILL HAVE PEACE OF MIND ABOUT THE REPAIR & THEY WILL USE ONLY JEEP PARTS.

NOTE: FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT YET.....THIS A GREAT TIME TO REVIEW YOUR EXISTING INSURANCE POLICY. VERIFY IF YOU CAN TAKE IT TO A JEEP DEALER FOR REPAIR. IF NOT MAYBE ITS TIME TO CHANGE INSURANCE COMPANIES OR POLICIES.

Most cars today are uni-body construction, jeeps and trucks are body on frame. The main difference is that the uni-body design supports its self and a body on frame is supported by the frame. Uni-body vehicles will more then likely be totaled then body on frame. I shudder at the man hour cost to replace a Frame, that is a lot of work.
Well, if you're going to replace the frame, might as well do a Hemi swap at the same time ?

Hey, I hope this process goes very well for you. Please learn from my experience. The full story is here: https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/sob-story-21-jlud-rubicon.82201/. The bottom line is make sure the repair shop does a full tear down and orders all necessary partners now or you may be waiting months and you may never know if they've found all of the issues. Evidently, Jeep Wranglers are very fragile, and somewhat poorly constructed (I think we all can agree).
Update: they came to there senses and declared it a total loss. Picked up my 2021 Willy's two weeks ago. I apologise for the late reply
