Hi there,

so we have two JL. One is my daily driver and the other one is wife’s toy (10000 miles after 3 years).

I was installing the front control arm skid plate which replaces the bolts. When I took them off, I noticed that my daily drivers bolts are as good as new(left), while the other ones bolt has some corrosion happened(right), although it has a lot less mileage drive. These are same grade 8 5/8 bolts I installed with lift kit. Wondering what could cause this? We are in California and the climate is quite dry.

It could be galvanic corrosion due to dissimilar metals, zinc vs steel.

that small amount would not concern me but I would put a smear of anti-seize on the smooth section so you can continue to remove them down the road. I had a rear lower control arm bolt seize in the bushing and had a heck of a time getting it out.

The zinc is to protect the steel. It is sacrificial to the steel. Moisture was trapped in there and it corroded.

That was my first thought as the OP is from the “Bay Area”. Having lived in the Bay Area of NorCal (Santa Cruz) in the past I realize that describes a big geographical area and doesn’t necessarily mean living in salt air or driving on the beach for most people.
