Yep similar to a credit card that you can tap to pay. The credit card doesn't have a battery but the equipment looking for the signal (I e. the Jeep) has to have power.
Right, that was the idea of RFID tags when they came out -- use an antenna to receive a tiny bit of power from the querying transceiver, store it in a cap and then use that power to broadcast a brief, short-range response back. No power source made them cheap and no-maintenance. I know I transplanted something that looked like one when I migrated to the Threedom fobs.

So clearly there's an active transceiver in the fob that does the authentication when its powered but also an RFID antenna right behind the starter button to read the passive tag as a backup. Not a bad system for functionality and peace of mind.

Just for shits and giggles and in the interest of ScienceTM I'll try removing the battery from a fob and ensure I can still get it started.
