First time changing oil on Diesel

Today was the first time I ever changed the oil myself on my 2021 JLU Diesel. Overall everything was straight forward like any other motor. However I did struggle a bit with a hose that stretches right above the oil filter and properly capturing the oil spill that happens after removing the filter from it's housing. What are your tips for capturing all of that oil that comes out of the filter and are there any easier ways to get the filter in and out (I couldn't figure out how that hose disconnects, has a red fitting on it)?

On my 2021 JLURD, I am able to squeeze in and out past said hose (like you did), BUT you are right...there is some oil spillage. If you didn't notice, you will also have oil pooled in the metal cup which holds your filter. I have recently purchased a turkey baster to suck all that extra oil out which spills while removing the filter.

I have not yet devised a way to reduce how much spills whilst removing the filter.

Try using shop rags or paper towels. Pack them like gauze all around the base of the oil filter housing, and any other space you noticed oil dripping while maneuvering it past that hose impeding the access.

Let the filter drain out before you unscrew it all the way.

I open the fumoto valve and start the engine draining. Then I loosen the filter to where the o-ring isn't sealed so the filter starts to drain out.

Then I do a 5 tire rotation and grease my aftermarket steering components.

Once that is done the oil is drained and the filter is pretty much empty. Pop it out and put in a new one. Torque to 18.5 ft-lbs (25 Newton Meters), close the fumoto valve and fill it back up with fresh oil.

I put a rag around the bottom of the oil filter housing. As for the hose that goes across the filter. I slide the clip off and take the hose apart to make it easier to take the filter out. Then I also use a syringe that I use for motorcycle fork oil to remove the excess oil from the filter housing.

The "hose" you speak of does have a retainer that can be loosened/undone so you can move it, that will give you a little more wiggle room(atleast on the JT)
BUT
Becareful, that hose is under pressure. If you pull/bend it too much where the red connector is, it will leak. I believe its connected to the braking system somehow and is either under pressure or vacuum.

For reference, this is how much oil that was left in the oil filter housing when I recently changed my oil.

Let the filter drain out before you unscrew it all the way.

Loosen the filter housing far enough to allow the oil to drain past the o-ring. It will take a few minutes, so start with this step. If you do it right, there will be zero mess. Good Luck!

I put a bunch of shop towels/rags around the base of filter, including areas below, before removing, including having 1 ready once removing the filter. They did a fantastic job of not letting any oil spill or drip
Also, there is no trick on getting around that hose, just be patient. Take ur time. It's a bit of a pain

Geez, you were not kidding about the time it takes to drain that oil filter housing. Tire rotation and a couple of cigars later I got impatient and soaked up little of the remaining oil with a rag just to keep the process moving...

I use a one gallon ziplock bag under the filter, and drop the filter into the bag before wiggling it past that hose.

More importantly, make sure that you methodically lube the o-rings on the new filter. Otherwise you'll throw a low oil pressure code.

How far out did you pull the filter? If it sits just right you can end up with an air seal that keeps it from draining as fast. But if you pull it out too far it spills all over.

Also, I'm old so doing a 5 tire rotation with 37s takes a bit of effort.

I sort of used the same process @grimmjeeper described but instead of doing a tire rotation I replaced the fuel filter.

1) Start draining oil with Fumoto valve through attached hose​

2) Unscrew oil filter​

3) Get a snack​

4) Remove access hatch over fuel filter (Artec Belly pan...)​

5) Remove oil drain hose, cap off fumoto valve​

6) Drain fuel from draincock into catch pan using Fumoto hose attachment. Rinses the oil out and prevents diesel from splashing everywhere.​

7) Replace fuel filter, close up hatch​

8) Replace oil filter​

9) Fill with 9 quarts ($100 worth) of unicorn juice​

Side note: Posted elsewhere, the manual supplement provided along with the HPFP recall now has a fuel filter replacement interval of every oil change instead of every other.

And they blame BioDiesel and improper priming of the fuel system after running out of fuel as a cause for the failure of the HPFP.
