I have run into my first problem with the JL - have not been able to find a solution to this with search. The door stopper bolt that you need to take out when removing the doors was easily removed. However, when I try to reinstall the door, the arm that attached to the bolt seems to have gone into the door, making it impossible to reattach to the bolt. Is there some kind of release to allow it to come out from the door enough to attach to the bolt? Apologies- the picture should be rotated 90 degrees, but the site wont let me do that.

Have you pulled on it hard? It's going to take a little effort to pull out of the detent.

I figured it out.... no way to pull it out without just a ton of leverage. Couldnt get it out at all with a pair of pliers. The problem is that I must have pulled the door when it was not all the way open, meaning the arm was still mostly in the door. Had to snake another hex bit in there to get it threaded a bit, then opened the door more to get the arm to extend, then when i pushed the door open it came out to where I could finish screwing it in. Going forward I will make sure that the door is at the widest open point before pulling it. I recommend everyone else do the same.

Last week my wife splattered some gravy while cooking and it got between the oven door cover and the glass. I had to take the door off so I could take it apart to clean it. Same exact issue as you encountered here, and same root cause (didn’t take oven door off when completely open and the spring loaded hinged was not fully extended).

Great info to only pull Jeep doors when fully open!

Watch this complete video. Guy says the "check strap" can be left unattached if you desire or attached and that it is mean't to go into door if you desire not to use check strap.

I have been avoiding this by removing the doors while they’re opened all the way. The noise you get when it moves is very unpleasant

Happened to me too. Thought for sure I had broken it and further was convinced that if it wasn't broken, it would be from how hard I had to pull to get that sucker out. All's well that ends well though.

So that is the trick right, open doors all the way before removing?

I have been following posts in regard to this issue. Yes, it seems best bet is to open door fully and then while the door is open fully, remove the bolt that secures the check strap to the JLU's body.

If you do not have the door fully open you chance the check strap will recede back into the door cavity.

I'm wondering if it might not be a bad idea to open the JLU's door fully and THEN, use a cheapy, $3.00+, small, needle nose vice grip pliers with rubber tubing over the needle nose jaws to lock/grip onto the check strap down close to the door cavity just prior to removing the door strap bolt.. This would also keep the strap from inadvertently, slipping back into the door cavity. Sounds crazy but way better then trying to get the receded strap out of the door cavity.

So do you drive around with the check strap protruding out if you open the doors fully before removal?

Not fully understanding your question. The check straps are mounted in the doors. Remove the door and there is no check strap on the vehicle while driving. Some are suggesting to not bolt the check strap to the body and leave it inside the door if you routinely remove your doors. This would leave the check strap inoperable so the door would just swing open like the JK. Another option is to just remove the check strap completely from the door.

I totally posted that 10 seconds before taking my doors off, obviously I saw at that point they recede in the doors not the body...doih had a Homer Simpson moment. That must have been real confusing to those who already were armed with that knowledge.Hope someone got a laugh at least!
