I changed the oil in both differentials today. The thread on here was very helpful in figuring out what oil to get. Used Royal Purple. 140 in rear and 90 plus a little 140 up front.

Three concerns I have:
1. When I drained the front diff. There was less than a quart that came out. 2/3 to 3/4 approximately (picture below, marked on bottle where the drained oil came to on a 1 quart bottle). I added oil until it just started to drip out the fill hole; about 1-1/3 quarts. Have 17k miles on my JLUR 2.0 with no problems so far. Should I be concerned the factory underfilled my front diff.? Did that actually happen?

2. Could not get the empty and fill bolts to be flush with the differential when I put them back on (pics below). Nothing is dripping out, but would have to crank them down HARD at least another full rotation, maybe more for them to be flush. I do have about 2 wraps of the yellow Teflon tape around each. Did that in the front as well and they are flush

3. Had this small chunk of metal come out when I drained the front.

Anyways, are my concerns valid or just being an overly anal Jeep owner doing the for the first time? Thanks

1. No worries at all. The initial factory fill will always be lower than expected since the FAD will take some of the oil and store it on the other side of the inner shaft bearing. You're good to go here, no worries.

2. Those plugs are what's known as pipe thread. If they ever go flush to the cover, then it's time to replace the cover. Pipe thread is tapered. If it ever goes flush with the housing, stop, and have the housing looked at. Front diff is the exception here since it's machined to be flush.

3. Yay! Golden nugget. Lol. Just kidding. Finding these pieces in there is no big deal at all. Almost all of them from when the housing was machined. They don't get perfectly clean so after the axle has been in service for some time, all of the little pieces that didn't come out in the wash, will find their way into the sump of the diff.

You have nothing here to worry about.

Is it recommended to top the diffs off after purchase or not a concern?
