Shouldn't be a problem, though a long heavy screwdriver will accomplish the same job. If you look down in the chain pocket (for lack of a better word), you will see the boss that the tool wedges against. Place the end of the screwdriver or pry bar on the chain and lever against the boss. There is not a lot of tension fighting you.

My is engine is one with the bolts lined up vertices not horizontal like your pic. (Needs the metal tool) . Is the orange plastic in my pictures the tensioner? How far down do I have to get to put pressure on a long screwdriver to push back the tensioner?
