My 2018 JLU 3.6 has a tick, I was told it was my throw out bearing and part of the clutch recall. That repair has since been done and while there the dealership said they recommend I replace my rocker arms and camshafts as there was noise coming from the passenger side of the motor. The quote for repairs don’t add up. I declined that service and when I picked up my jeep after clutch repair I noticed the tick was still there but much quieter. Fast forward to past few weeks, tick is now back and I am getting DTC codes for random misfires P0300 and this morning my CEL started flashing for about 5 secs and went back solid, ran the codes and had a new code P000a ("A" Camshaft Position Slow Response - Bank 1, Exhaust A).

Is this the start of my hell? Is it something else?

How many miles from the dealer service to the codes?

Maybe a 1000? I drive a lot, the Jeep gets a few days off a week but is still my primary as my other car is at 212k miles.

You might check the connectors on cam VVT solenoids, at the front of the valve/cam covers.

Was your initial ticking noise only appear at a certain RPM or was ticking constantly when the engine is running? Mine started to tick all of a sudden from 2700 to 3500 PRM. It likely ticks as PRM goes up, but becomes difficult to hear with exhaust. I did some research and found a couple thread that 6sp manual owners experienced similar ticking noise, some need to replace rocker arms and others believe something is rattling rather than a more serious issue of engine ticking.

How much was your quote to replace rocker arms? Unfortunately, we are out of warranty and those codes suggest major repair bills. I am heading to a dealer to get mine checked in two days.

BTW, after your clutch recall, did you have any issues with "Service Transmission" light? I have been holding off on getting this done since many with larger tires or re-geared ratios are reporting issues after the software update with the recall.

I here is around 2000-3000 maybe, it does go away but if I’m cruising and not really accelerating it will tick a lot. I can’t get this to reproduce while parked and in neutral 99 % of the time.
I was quoted 5300 to start maybe more if they think I need head gaskets? This is for one side. Not both. Service writing told me it booked at 6.1 hours for both sides. So even at $200 an hour labor rate how is it another $4000 in parts? Blows my mind.

I have not had any lights concerning the clutch replacement, clutch felt great for a few weeks now it feels the same as it was pre repair. Clutch peddle feels like it’s worn out and gritty again. Day I picked it up from repair it was butter smooth

That fault is for VVT control. The engine is likely severely contaminated with metal debris clogging oil passages from a worn camshaft.

That estimate seems very steep. I hope another dealer can provide something more reasonable. It sounds like you should have it fixed ASAP or trade in if any takers.

Is the VVT control easy to fix/replace? Mine just started ticking a few weeks ago, and I have an upcoming appointment at a dealer. I am wondering if VVT control replacement would be the first step before they open up the engine to check rocker arms or lifters?

The VVT is an electronically (engine computer) controlled system that uses electrical solenoids to controll the flow of the filtered oil pressure to actuate the cam phasers.

In other words, no it is not easy to diagnose or repair. It’s a motherfucker.

I had someone come over and take a look at the jeep, he is saying he didn’t hear any signs of rocker failure but instead he said he believes it’s an ignition coil slowly going bad? He used a mechanic stethoscope to listen closely but I don’t know if it’s still the right diagnosis.

Tell him "thank you for your time" and then ignore him.

I ran JScan this morning on a trip to store and back looking for misfires. Pretty clear most the misfires came during the cold start/ warm up .

You have a whole bank going out. Something is wrong on that side.
