When I attempted to look up the correct gear oil needed for my 2-door Sport's front and rear (LSD) axle on AMSOIL's website, it offered two different 3.6L engine choices for my Jeep as circled below in red. I've looked through all my records, documentation and original window sticker and can't find anything, so appreciate any insight or advice on where it is located.

Jeep Wrangler JL Engine Codes for AMSOIL Gear Oil? Pag

On a related note, neither AMSOIL nor the JL Owner's Manual specify what friction modifier to add, so hope somebody can advise on this point as well. Thanks in advance and happy Jeepin'!

Dana specifies 75W-140 in both axles, which offers greater protection than the Jeep downgraded spec (but slightly worse mileage). I believe the Amsoil contains the friction modifier already but you should check.

LOL...OK thanks. I was hoping it was gonna be a simple answer, so I'll save the read for tomorrow morning's coffee! Much appreciated.
Simple answer I could have easily given will not get you ready lets say, to do the diff fluid change on your JL the proper way, with the needed tools, with the proper fluids, etc.. ....

A tad of reading will be worth it's weight in gold.... After reading ask any ? you still have...

Also, if you feel you want to go with Amsoil, you will want to use this Amsoil product in both front and rear diffs.. Proper weight as per Dana and it has friction modifier in it..... and the squeezable pouches are a pure pleasure to use..

It has the same mention on the 3.6 for engine oil also. I don’t know and no one else has an answer so far.

Your engine code is the 8th digit in your VIN.

In this case, I'm guessing if your 3.6 has E-Torque or not.

Edit - The 3 letter codes next to it (ERC / ERG ) are the order codes for the engine. ERC being the regular 3.6 with ESS and ERG being 3.6 with E-Torque. For reference, I have a EcoDiesel, my 8th VIN number being M, and my order code for the engine being EXJ.

OK thank you, that makes sense, although I don't understand where the "ER" comes from. Regardless, the 8th digit in my VIN is a "G" and I my engine is an eTorque, so I assume that "ERC G" applies to my configuration. Really appreciate the info!

@flyer92

You aren't thinking that what engine you have makes a difference in regard to the differential fluid you use are you? It does not!

This.

All axles get the same differential oil. There's also only one type of friction modifier.

The decision is simply what brand you like.

The discussion on what weighr oil to use does get some discussion, which is linked in threads above.

Oh for sure...LOL. The only reason I asked is because I had to choose an engine type on the Amsoil website and had never seen those engine codes before. Thanks for asking though...I can see how some people might think the engine has something to do with it.

@flyer92

You might want to re-think going with Amsoil. I'm not at all saying it is not an aok offering but... but it's pricey.

Consider going with Valvoline pouches. Valvoline has additive. DO go with 75/140 in front and rear as recommended by Dana.

Hope you are reading through that thread as there is a lot of very good info there...

Valvoline is now owned by Saudi Arabia. Don't go with Valvoline, buy something else. I started buying Amsoil but any quality oil will do. (How's that for contradictory forum advice?).

While you’re at it, switch over everything in your life to organic locally grown/slaughtered meats, fruits and vegetables. That way you can be fully supportive of American made products. Every large company is owned by some other larger company.

I’ll second the Valvoline flex fill pouches. They make filling the diff back up super simple.

I try to, and I buy American made tires too. Amsoil has the pouches, not just Valvoline. Call me crazy, but I draw the line at refusing to directly purchase goods from the sponsor of 9/11. You're free to do as you wish, of course.
