I’m not sure if this is the right location for thsu question:

This week I did a Jeep Adventure Academy day in Hollister CA. Due to all the rain is was mega muddy which made for an exceptionally awesome day. However I learned something new that I still don’t understand.

In 4L - When in mud, sometimes I had limited grip and one or both rear wheels would spin freely in the mud while the Jeep slid around a bit. I was instructed to keep the gas power on and even and after a few seconds the computer would do something and suddenly I would have traction.

What exactly was happening? Do other cars have this too (ie Audi)?

This is called BLD or "Brake Limited Differential" and is outlined in the owners manual.

In general what it comes down to is this. The computer (aka ABS unit) needs to see wheel spin or no wheel spin. Then it can make the decision as for what to do. If you are a standstill, it has no idea as to what to do until it receives information via each wheel speed sensor.

Your Audi works similar. So, if you are in a boatload of snow and stomp the throttle, you'll hear the ABS unit buzzing as it's trying to adjust the brake at each corner to get you the maximum grip that is available at the time. Depending on the AUDI, it might then use the Haldex unit to apply power to the rear.
