What’s the deal here? I keep seeing JLs / JTs getting stolen here in DFW on various Jeep groups. How are they doing it? If the electronic ignition is so easy to circumvent shouldn’t there be a recall? Seems pretty ridiculous that it’s pretty inadequate compared to other manufacturers and we just have to sit and cross our fingers that our brand new car isn’t next.

A lot of cars from a lot of manufacturers are getting stolen everyday. You just see the Jeeps because of the groups you are following. Don't have the stats but not sure it is more common with Jeep or easier to hack than other cars/trucks

tazer recently rolled out an antitheft feature where it bricks the accelerator until a PIN is entered. it won't stop someone from towing it away but it'll stop anyone trying to drive it away under it's own power even if they manage to start it.

Not even in the top 10, which is impressive given how many of us have soft tops.

May be time to think about where and not what.

A very inexpensive layer of security you can get is a faraday box. It kills all wireless signals of anything that you put inside it so they cant pick up on your fob when trying to steal it. (Yes, with the right tool it can be detected from outside of your house, and amplified to trick the vehicle into starting)

Of course no security is foolproof, and a motivated theif will find a way around anything you do, but for 15 bucks on amazon its a no brainer that makes things a lot more difficult for them.

I purchased two of the Faraday bags for the key fobs and tested them for performance. I could not open the door with the key in the bag.

If you are a paraplegic in a wheel chair after you tried to steal someone’s vehicle, I don’t think you will be so inclined to do it again.

This is the exact way most new cars are getting stolen now a days. Don’t keep your FOBs next to your front door and if possible keep them in a faraday box/bag of some kind.

Thieves use a antenna to clone your fobs signal and open the door and the repeat to start the ignition. The equipment to do this costs around $100 so once dumb thieves figure out how to do it thefts are going to go up even more.

Protect yourself now before it’s too late.
