Ok...the reason I'm not making these myself is....?

I can't buy sound deadening material at the big box store of about the right thickness, and use a utility knife to cut it and the black carpeting I've glued to it (also purchased at the big box store) to shape, and along with a little heavy duty velcro, maybe some assassin strip like material on ebay, get 96% of what Hotheads or Mopar is doing for $100s?????

Granted--the back windows may be a little harder to make myself.

Thoughts?

Search this in the forums. I detailed what I did with my JKU when it had a hardtop.

Yes, you can. My total investment was $60 for the entire roof. Yes, it worked well in the Florida sun.

I guess it depends where you're at, re: material used and purpose. Sound deadening or temperature reducing. Does the sound deadening have any R properties?

I'm in Florida, which is closer to the Sun than Mercury in the summer. I ended up using ISO board from Home Depot.

1/2" ISO board (R 3.6), cut to size with a template and then covered with headliner material I found at Jo Ann Fabrics. Held to the top with hi temp double stick tape.

I noticed a difference in Jeep temp as soon as done. Then again, I noticed a better change to Jeep temp going to a premium sailcloth top.
Hardtop has security (relative), but it's a cooker, especially in hotter climates.

I had about $50 in all involved. Much better than the $300-$500 for professionally made ones.

Do you feel like your heat control headliners also provided some sound reduction--even if not your primary purpose for their introduction?

A little bit, but didn't notice a ton. Heat was primary issue on black JKU hardtop. Made it much nicer esp in summer.

Boom Mats are around $200 for a set.

I am likely going to go with their headliners once they release a JL version.

Reviving an old thread but, if you want sound deadening, don't go with foam. Do mineral wool, then beautify it. Mineral wool beats foam at sound deadening by orders of magnitude.
