I have a Sahara with the upgraded display size. It appears my young nephew rubbed something across the screen causing damage to the screen. Is this something easily replaced by a dealer?

Head swap means swapping the entire head unit out. So the screen, radio parts it’s attached to, and all the various systems it has to handle its inputs gets replaced.

if I remember the last time I was looking at them they were in the ~$800 for parts and then labor if you have someone install it.

maybe the dealer can just swap the screens.

If you're somewhat comfortable with electronics, the screen isn't actually too difficult to replace. It is expensive, though. I believe the part you're looking for is LA084X01 and it can cost between $350 and $500. OEM (from LG) is more expensive, obviously. I'm not familiar with alternative brands, but a replacement screen is a hell of a lot cheaper than an entire radio.

You'll have to remove the unit and disassemble it, then remove the screen from the frame that surrounds it by slightly bending out metal tabs that secure it. It sounds daunting, but it really isn't that bad. Everything is plug and play and requires no special programming. You're just dealing with ribbon cables, mostly.

Sometime after 2020, LG changed the screens to address the delamination issue, but it comes at the cost of the actual quality of the screen. The older ones had very little backlight bleed where the newer ones are much more prominent. I'd avoid getting a used screen from a radio older than 2020 as the heat that pumps out of these things are what separate the various layers.

In the future, don't use anything but water to clean the screen. No chemicals, no special cleaners, just water on a fresh microfiber towel.

Maybe find a non working head unit with a good screen and swap some parts around.

Rohdawg...are you suggesting I can purchase that simple $35 item, open the dash, and just replace that screen?

Certainly a better scenario that the $800 someone suggested.

Thoughts?

Shouldn’t the parents of the nephew be paying for the damages? I say take it to the dealer and get your radio back to the way it was.

You would need to pull the head unit. Im sure there is a youtube video on how to get it out. looks easy. I bet the screen placement isn't too difficult with that amazon part. don't have a lot to lose.could be fun.

I believe the digitizer is glued to the LCD and it has to be carefully removed from the LCD and attached to the existing LCD. Folks are using these to fix 8.4" head units which the digitizer is delaminating from the LCD panel.
