After I installed my stage 1 tune from EOC, with the DEF still enabled, I started noticing heavy DEF usage. Now because of this I've always filled up my DEF tank right around the halfway mark. Sometime after that, I started noticing that when I was nearing the halfway marker on my DEF tank level, the Jeep would sometimes tell me that I needed to add DEF or I was going into limp mode within 500 mi. Now I would go add DEF and I only get about 2.4/2.5 gallons in there before it was topped off, and as we know it's a 5 gallon tank.

Now I just assumed that this was because of the tune. It started happening about the same time it definitely eats DEF like crazy now with my racing tune, they have to be hand in hand...

Or maybe not!

During my last Amazon maintenance fluid purchase spree, I saw this product from Hot Shots Secret, a DEF additive. I figured screw it, I'll order two bottles, worst case scenario they don't do nothing.

I get my DEF from Bucee's at the pump, And because of my tune and the extra usage I usually add anywhere from 1.5 to 2.4 gallons every 3 to 6 weeks depending how much I'm driving.

I think it's supposed to be 2 oz of this stuff every time you fill up the DEF tank, but I've just been indiscriminately squirting it in there and just guesstimating how much is 2 oz for about 3 months now. Today is the first time in 40,000 mi that I have been able to get my Jeeps DEF tank gauge under the halfway marker... 🤯

So at this point I'm just going to keep driving and smashing that skinny pedal, and see how I can get the gauge to go before it starts complaining about needing DEF. If I get down to a quarter of a tank, I'll probably grab a 2.5 gallon box as a safety in case it decides to go into limp mode early.

I guess there was crystallization on the sensor probably? I've added DEF additives to the tank before and I've never had this kind of response from the system... Even if you guys haven't had any issues with your DEF tank yet, I would recommend getting a bottle and using it. Do like I said, what's the worst that can happen? Cleans up some of that crystallization crap? Not a bad idea!!

I'm probably going to buy a box of 12 of these here shortly. Even if I get my stage 2 tune sometime later this year, I'm not going to install it for a minimum of 2 years from now. So I'm probably going to keep eating up DEF for quite a bit longer.

Interesting… I started using Rislone when I got a CEL and wasn’t sure why. In hindsight I think it was because I submerged my hot SCR in an ice cold stream. Apparently it needs to be hot to work… who knew 🤷‍♂️
But I continue to use it when I add DEF just in case it helps. It looks like the hotshots stuff is cheaper and requires less so probably 1/4 the cost to use it vs the Rislone. I might have to change…

Yeah I used Rislone in the past three subsequent fill ups. Maybe it's a different chemical makeup? The bottle in the picture on your post does say it prevents crystallization, doesn't say it treats it like the DEFender does. 🤔

I’ve been using rislone def treatment as a preventative and at 90k miles have had good luck so far.

I run mine down pretty low before I fill up at truck stops here in Michigan. I like loves because they keep a blanket on the def pump and have high turnover of def with the commercial traffic.

Fill up at a truck stop if possible. It's significantly cheaper and you don't have to deal with those awkward boxes / extension tubes.

Try the Peak BlueDef Platinum. It's designed for that purpose so that you dont need any additives

I don't know about anyone else, but I grab my DEF at buc-ee's. Last time I fueled up this past Monday it was $3.73 per gallon for DEF at buc-ee's in Melissa, TX. When you factor in the $9.99, 8oz container of DEFender, and factor in the correct dose size, you get $6.28 per gallon with that mixture.

Peak BlueDef Platinum Is $19.49 for a 2.5 gallon, so when you break that down to a 1 gallon size, it is about $7.80 per gallon

Obviously that depends where you are and what you have around you, but for me it would actually cost me more money and then I have to deal with the hassle of those annoying boxes.

For me its not about the money. I didn't buy a jeep cause it was cheep, or for the mph, or the dry interior or even the quiet cabin.

It's a toy to me, I buy for convenience and peace of mind.

Granted what I was talking about as far a DEF is for my ram 2500 cummins.. but yea. Hell I drink more cost wise than the cost of that box of platinum in 2 days
