Modern synthetic winches are probably as safe or safer than snatch straps. They are a great piece of equipment to have when wheeling on steep hills, rocky areas, etc... Where using a snatch strap can be somewhat dangerous due to the terrain.
I use a Winch2Go with my car hauler all the time. Being strapped to something solid with flat strap and winching with the rope is soooo much safer than some of the setups I see guys improvise when they have a car break at the track. One day I winched 7 cars onto various trailers and the ability to move the winch anchor is so useful when it comes to staying out of the way. Of course recovery has so many variables compared to just loading broken gear.

I don’t think I would own a wire based winch again.
