With a dead keyfob if I press the keyfob against the start/stop button will the engine start? Why does it work this way?

It is made to work this way. Supposedly you push the corner of the fob where the key pivot is against the start button. I needed to do this one time when the battery in my fob wasn't working and it didn't work for me so that's all I know. I did see a video where someone took the battery out of their fob and then used it to start the Jeep.

What starts the Jeep is an RFID chip in the key fob. It's the same sort of thing that's in your credit card when you tap it on a card reader. Since the RFID chip is powered by wireless signals from the sensor, it only works at very close distance. This is why card readers only collects your credit card's info and not the card info of everyone else in line.

The key fob is essentially a powered amplifier for the RFID chip so it can be detected when it's in or near the Jeep. Beyond what would be the usual RFID range. The amplifier is entirely for your convenience. It's not required for the RFID chip to function. Without amplification, you just need to get it much closer to the sensor for it to work.

Pressing the Start button with the narrow end of the key fob is the closest you can get the RFID chip to the sensor in the Start button and where it's most likely to be read while unpowered.
