D44 axle takeoff

It's something with the axle. Maybe the tube, maybe the C.

As for why it bent most likely strain on the D30 from heavy 37" tires. With upgraded steering, knuckles and balljoints the axle is the weak point that is going to take on the extra stress in a hit. My Jeep gets wheeled pretty hard and last week was the final straw. The left driver side took so much weight that it must have bent so much to cause my steering wheel to go off center by 30 degrees. So yeah, this axle is done - not worth fixing and not worth wheeling with it any more and risk wearing out ball joints, fighting the passenger pull OR creating more uneven wear on the tires.

There's a reason everyone says to not put 37s on a D30 and then drive it over boulders.

By steering linkage you mean like a bent tie rod or draglink? I have the Cavfab 2.5 system so that's definitely not bent.


For anyone interested here are the numbers I have. Toe could be fixed but the camber is not fixable.

Yeah. So I guess I could drive it until something snaps and leaves me stranded on the trail but I'd rather just let it sit until I can upgrade to a D44. I'm sure something will come along eventually. It took over 2 years to find a Rubi transfer case but I did eventually find one to install so I'm sure I'll make this new axle happen somehow. I'm pretty determined when it comes to the Jeep.

Toe could be fixed but the camber is not fixable.

Toe, as you know is adjustable.
Camber can be adjusted also. There are offset shims/cones/sleeves for the ball joints. Several auto manufacturers use them from the get go.
I've not messed with the ball joints on these axles, but I have read several complain about a split sleeve making it difficult.

I'm not saying that is the fix for yours, just that it's an option possibility available for some.

I rotated my tire today. With the front tire off I looked at the ball joints a tad.

You can see the split in the sleeve/bushing whatever you want to call it. Those can be replaced with offset ones to adjust caster and camber to some degree.

Picture is of the passenger knuckle. Wheel is off and I was just slightly ahead of the axle.
A= the inner C on the axle.
B= the knuckle.
Arrow is pointing at the hole, that is the split in the sleeve between ball joint and the knuckle.

Not for our rigs, but here's an example of an offset sleeve.

See how the hole isn't centered. As you turn the sleeve it will effect caster and camber.

I've never done a lift on a Wrangler, just on an Xterra which was slightly different.
