I have a 2" bumpstop extension in the front of my JLUR. I want to swap this for an 1 1/4 to gain some up travel. I don't want to disassemble and remove the springs to do this. I'm sure I can get the new ones in but I'm tempted to cut out the old ones - sawzall? Has anyone done this?

Sure it's possible, but don't be surprised if it turns into more work than just popping the bottom of the spring out. Cutting things that aren't secured with a Sawzall doesn't work well. Even if you start cutting while it's bolted in, once you get past the center you're trying to reach inside the spring and hold it while you cut.

I understand. I've run this around in my head for a while. Thought about going from both sides to the center, from the top (if I can fit a blade) and slicing into 3 pieces with the center still bolted. but ultimately your probably correct and I'm fighting it at some point. That's why I thought I'd see if anyone else has attempted this.

Just to clarify, are talking about the front bump stop and shortening the front metal jounce tube

No, I'm asking about the 2" UHMW bump stop extension (added with lift) that is sitting on top of the front axle. Bottom of spring.

I personally wouldn’t do it that way, but then again, it only takes me about 5 minutes to pull my springs….
Sorry but I'm not that fast. Takes me about 5 min just to get up off the concrete garage floor!

Yeah , I get it, I didn’t say it doesn’t hurt, lol…. It just seems easier , even if it takes a little longer, to clean up the cut if needed and paint the raw edge, things like that…..

Just to be clear, I'm not talking about cutting down the existing bumpstops, just obliterating them into small enough pieces to remove so I can slide in the new smaller ones at full droop without disconnecting anything.

I wish someone made a sleeve with the ability to keep the factory foam bumpstop.

So you pull the foam bumpstop, cut the factory jounce tube 1.375" measured from the bottom of the jounce tube (is that how much longer they are on the XR models?), slide the jounce tube sleeve over the factory piece, and then pop the foam bumpstop back in place. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

An ACOS from JKS would work, but at a minimum you automatically get a 1" lift.

Me too. I thought about shortening the tube. I can cut but not weld so that’s a no go. I looked into the ACOS and similar options but they are too much for my budget.

If you are dead set about not removing the springs, I'd let it droop and use combination of dramel (circular cutting wheel) and drills to to split the bump stop top to bottom and punch it out. Remove the bolt, then put a 1" hockey puck on other short bump stop in. You can even RTV the puck in there.

I know it sounds kludgy, but you can certainly obliterate that bump stop extension.

You can also use a spring compressor.

In the end though, I still think it's easier to remove shock bolt, remove sway bar bolt, droop it and pull the spring. You can even mildly use a spring compressor if you don't want to disconnect everything.

Thanks, those are all really great ideas. Drill especially, and I'll have to look at my dremell. Spring compressor might also be very nice.

I considered using hydraulic bump stops up front in order to shorten the front tube, but then we went to 39s and 3.5" lift springs and had to add an extra 1" of bumpstop for clearance. A stock xr needs shorter tubes or at least a 1" lift. I think Jeep built them that way so we could clear 37s without adding any bump stop.
