Sorry but JEEP puts all their hard work into the Wrangler. The Cherokee Line has been their crap and butter for a long long time. I wouldn't get any cherokee wether its Cherokee or Grand Cherokee. They just are built really cheap. IMO. But then again My 2000 Cherokee Sport was the last Cherokee I had so I could be talking out of my ass. Most newer Cherokees depreciate wayyyyyy too much. Probably have the worst depreciation of any popular car out.

Okay, OP, so there are a few things to consider.

The Overland and SRT are different cars. They are both in the GC body, but they feel and drive different. I'd maybe rent a SRT for a bit..I believe there are apps for that thing.

Seeing that you are even looking at a Wrangler is telling me you want or have more interest in some of the off road capabilities of the Jeep line. Obviously any trim of the Wrangler will have that. The Overland has it too, but not anything to make a fuss over. The SRT has less.

The DC thing is an important factor too. I make the I270 drive from Frederick county to Montgomery county 5 days a week. Do not get a manual. It will become annoying much too fast.

I was in the same boat as you.

I was between the JL Rubicon or the GC Overland maybe High Altitude.

I chose to wait for the JL 2020. "it's a Jeep thing" is why. All those quirks and things that make life interesting and fun in a Wrangler. Sometimes the ones that make you want to curse the Jeep engineering and design department. That "Jeep thing" that still applies to your luxury 65k Jeep GC.

In the end I chose the JL because I liked the off road capabilities even if I never use them. I like the "Jeep thing" on a car I know has support and can be repaired outside the dealership. I love the new GC. Just not at that cost.

Have you seriously considered the GC Trailhawk? We just picked one up over the weekend and it sure seems nice and looks like it could be quite capable on moderate trails ie air lift suspension and the skid plates seem to cover more than they do on my Rubi (which I wouldn't part with!)

I own both a '18 Wrangler JLUS and a '15 GC SRT. They're both awesome, very different of course. For daily round town driving, I flip the top down and take the Wrangler 90% of the time. If I'm going 50+ miles on the freeway, then I'll take the SRT (and constantly use cruise control to avoid all-too-easy tickets!). Wife on the other hand prefers the lux of the SRT.

You can't go wrong with either, but they're not comparable cross-shops. Decide what you want to do and choose accordingly. Or get both if you can!

Ain't that the truth brother. And, after a lift, and bigger tires you could bring the Wrangler mpg's down to the SRT level. Wow, I'm sure that useless thought helped you.....not. Hang in there, you'll have the right decision pop in your mind when you least expect it.
I disagree, I have a lift and 33's, no air dam, bumper inserts removed. Im getting over 20 city, my avg reading on the dash is 18 and thats because I go off-road 2 times a week and kill the average.

Ordered on 5/31 and still waiting...got my wife a overland a week ago and I LOVE IT...now it’s got me thinking I should cancel the JL and go for a GC SRT.

The luxury features on the GC are amazing, lane assist is awesome and I don’t know how often I’ll be wheeling - would like to as much as possible but with family and other hobbies I just don’t know, also I live in the DC area so no close trail to go have fun at without it being a longer trip.

Thoughts, pros and cons? Stupid to both have the same car in the driveway? Hers white overland, mine would be black srt

Talk me off the ledge
I'm in love with my JLU Sahara and wouldn't want anything else. However, from previous experience , and I have a lot of it, from owning vehicles that made me wish I purchased something else, that feeling will stay with you as long as you own what you bought. All you're going to do is wish you got what you were most passionate about. So that said, if the GC SRT ( I have no idea what that is by the way) is what you truly want to have, then you MUST get it or you won't be truly happy. Me however, my Mojito JLU with every option after 6 months and 6100 miles is the best decision I ever made other then marrying my amazing wife, and that's another fairytale. Good luck.

Indeed you are. Have a '12 GC we've owned since new and at 125K miles it has been an absolute rock. When it eventually has to go we wouldn't hesitate on getting another one.

There's an all new GC right around the corner. So factor that into your decision too. That said, even though the current GC is long in the tooth, it's still a fantastic vehicle. It's "right-sized" imo, if not looking for a 7-seater. It drives extremely well, is very quiet inside (on par with luxury brands), and is overall refined. It has a few sharp edges (figuratively and literally) in the interior, and overall, the interior design isn't noteworthy, nor is it bad by any means. And of course the SRT and Trackhawk are very powerful and fast.

Perhaps the Trailhawk is your middle of the ground solution, assuming you don't mind picking up one in its last or second to last year of production before the new generation comes out. The flip side of that is that there are some killer deal, both % off MSRP and APR.

I test drove a GC back when I was looking in 2016. I forget which model it was but it was really plush.
Remember it is a uni body and front wheel drive.

The uni body part is right, the front wheel drive part isn’t. GC are rear wheel, or 4 wheel drive. All wheel drive for SRT. Maybe you drove a regular Cherokee?

I thought this note included the GC. My bad.
The 2017 Jeep Cherokee is offered in Sport, Latitude, Limited, Trailhawk and Overland trims. All Cherokees except the Trailhawk come with front-wheel drive as standard, offering all-wheel drive (Active Drive I) as an option.
