Me too. I can actually guarantee that when running Android Auto, you are still getting charge properly. All bets are off with Carplay - I know nothin' about that.
Same - I think my pixel charges faster than spec allows via a USB B to C cable and Android auto. It's at least 2 amps.

@nerp That's what I was thinking (Software update). I'm going to check with a different cable (The one I'm using right now is a cheaper one), and then look into any issues with Apple Carplay/ iOS because I have almost the same exact set up as Jeepnoob with far worse results.

That USB Multi-meter is pretty cool. My buddy with the '15JKU said he's noticed it in his Jeep, his old Ram pickup, and his loaner car (Chrysler 200) that his phone (when in use) seems to draw more than it can pull a charge. My wife's does not, however.

Alright, so I pulled my OEM iPhone cable from my bedside charger and swapped it with the cable I had in the Jeep. it seems to charge fine while using Apple Carplay and driving. So my cheapo USB Cable will probably get moved to a charging only cable.

That said- the extreme cold seems to be part of the extreme battery drain. I went to take our dogs out on Saturday, my phone was on data with an 84% charge and i was using it connected to the Baby monitor in my apartment. It discharged to almost 0 within 30 minutes of exposure, at 18 degrees (F).

There is apparently a whole lot of evidence around the abnormal draining speed of the lithium ion batteries in iPhones. I did a quick google search of "apple battery drain in cold" and there are a lot of posts indicating that batteries can drain in extreme colds in minutes. I've never experienced this on Android, however, there is a message you can get on Android based on an in-phone temperature sensor: "Charging stopped, your phone is too cold to charge. Charging will resume when the temperature returns to normal."

The USBC 3.1 spec requires that cables be able to support 3.0A at 5V.

Yes, C to C is 5v 3A. I'm using A to C, which supports a max of 2A.

Glad you were able to figure out that you got a bum cable. I only use Apple or Anker cables as they seem to handle higher amps.

I confirmed that the USB 1 (dash “Media Center”) and USB 2 (inside center console) support CarPlay and charging. I tested both USB-A and USB-C in the Media Center. The USB 3 ports (left side of the rear USB panel) charges and plays audio through the sound system but DOES NOT support CarPlay (both USB-A and USB-C ports). USB ports on the right side of the rear USB panel, with an icon that looks like a battery, ONLY charges and DOES NOT support audio input to the sound system. So in summary: USB 1 and USB 2 support CarPlay and charging. USB 3 supports audio and charging. USB 4 (I don’t know what else to call it) supports charging. I hope this helps!

The geek side of me wants to measure the output so I just ordered that USB voltage meter...coming Tuesday. I’ll post pictures of the results when it comes.

for Android phones: USB type C to type C off the dash is the fastest charging, 5v/3a

for Iphones: Get a Type C to Lightening cable, and same thing, charge off that dash. If you're looking for rapid charging at least.

From the descriptions, this might not be the explanation for many here, but wanted to throw this out there in case it helps some people who come across this thread. Apple introduced more strict USB accessory security settings back in the summer. This caused me some issues until I stumbled upon information about it and how it works:

This is all awesome info. Thank you guys for posting it! I hope this is able to help anyone else having issues. Since I started using my Apple cable, I've had no issues- even with the extreme cold, though it FINALLY broke today.

Just to complete what I said I would do...I did some voltage metering on the USB ports of my JLUR and have the following results (charging an iPhone XS with 60% charge, with Apple USB-A to Lightening cable; I used a USB-C to USB-A mini-adapter to test USB-C):

USB1 - 5.01-5.03V / 0.95A output (both USB-A and USB-C)
USB2 - 5.10V / 0.95A output
USB3 - 5.04-5.08V / 0.95A output (both USB-A and USB-C)
USB4 - 4.88v - 4.99V / 0.95A output (both USB-A and USB-C)

So, while there seems to be slight inconsistency with the voltage of USB1-3, they are all consistently above 5V; whereas, USB4 is definitely lower. (Its the only port that supports charging-only and no audio, so this makes sense.) All ports were consistent with the amperage to the phone though. I hope this helps someone out there with similar questions...

Revisiting this issue:
I started using my $5 cable again, as the nylon webbing around it is more robust than the rubber coating on my OEM Apple cable, which seems to shave off when contacting the zip tie i use to hold it in place in the console, and also it bends and kinks easier if it gets caught opening and closing. I've been paying close attention to the charge when pluging in, and when unplugging. Using Apple Car play with Spotify. It seems there are no charging issues using this cable, so I'm guessing that the rapid battery drain had more to do with the extremely cold temps we saw last winter, and that the cable may not have been that big of an issue (still an issue, but less of one, maybe). I still have the OEM Apple cable coiled up in my console so if needed, it will be available for use. For now, I'm going to stick with my cheapo nylon webbing coated one and see how it goes as temps drop.

Hi guys. I’m here because I’m trying to figure this out as well. I have an iPhone 7 with a generic usb cable plugged into the center console (2) port. It’s been working fine for months, but just this past week I noticed while CarPlay IS working, it is not simultaneously charging my phone. Instead, it’s draining like crazy. The temps have not been anything below 30*F at this point, so I don’t believe the cold is a factor. Same thing happens in port 1. CarPlay is working fine, but the phone is not charging. I haven’t tried pulling fuses yet. My phone and cable combination works just fine in my 2014 Subaru Forester, so I know it’s not the phone or cable themselves.

So it works in your forester but not in the jeep? For shits and giggles just buy an apple usb and see if it works in the jeep!!! as has been said generic cables don't play in the jeeps!
