This morning I took the Jeep into the Dealer for an oil change and tire rotation. Thirty minutes later the service rep comes out and says the Jeep is not safe to drive due to a burning smell suspected to be the clutch. I have never had any smell of burning anything. They provide a rental and I go to the Jeep to grab some stuff and it smelled like the Jeep had been on fire. Never had any issue like that prior to dropping it off. They think it is the clutch and are doing further inspections. This thread is the closest example of my situation I can find. Jeep has 5372 miles on it and this is my third stick shift Jeep. Iā€™ll let you know how it goes.

It gets better. The second clutch also took a dump 600 miles later. They once again replaced the slave cylinder. We'll see how long this one lasts.

Am I the only one to have issues with this?

I have a 2018 JLU with around 4500 miles. Noticed at times, starting around 1500 miles or so, that after shifting gears, the clutch would not fully return to the fully disengaged position. Last time it happened was yesterday (3/2/2019) and it never fully returned after I got home. This morning I was going out, and when i depressed the clutch pedal to start the Jeep, the pedal dropped to the floor and would not return. The Jeep wouldn't start so I had it towed to the dealership. Waiting to hear from them tomorrow since they were not open today. I'm hoping it'll be an easy fix, but I'm beginning to expect the worst.

Interesting. Mine had a similar issue but it would always start, never refused to do so. Wasn't really shiftable once started though.

I am having some major issues also with my clutch. It has been to 2 different dealers 6+ times for this issue. Response from first dealer "It's a Jeep, not a car" .... Pedal Assembly replace -- no change. Master/Slave replaced because it was Leaking ?? This changed it be an intermittent problem. Pressure plate and Throw out bearing (which part of it is plastic !) replaced. It was "good for about 800 miles -- now it is bad again. Total of 10,000 miles on vehicle. I know how to drive a stick. I have bought used manual transmission vehicles, drove 50,000 miles and never had any clutch issues. Keep the topic going as there is an issue with the manual transmission on these JLs

The JL uses the same MT that the Toyota Tacoma uses right? Seems to be one of the least reported problems on this site so I think you might just have a lemon, sadly. Are you going to invoke lemon law? You are well beyond 3 tries to fix the same problem it seems.

2018 JLUR with 6-speed manual. Clutch got softer and softer, eventually wouldn't return to the normal position.

Dealer called, the slave cylinder failed. They are replacing: Flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disc, throwout bearing, pilot bushing, and of course, the slave cylinder. I'm guessing the slave cylinder contaminated the clutch with hydraulic fluid.

Also have a 2018 JLU in SC. On second possibly 3rd clutch. Dealer currently has jeep at shop for 4+ weeks.

Update...

After 3,900 miles and 3 failed clutches, I have started the lemon law process. Jeep is drivable now (after 3rd repair) but I don't trust it worth a ****.

Adding my Jeep to this clutch tale of woe.

Similar experiences. Pedal to the floor. Can't get the jeep into gear. Towed to dealership.

First dealership claimed it was air in the hydraulic line. Bled it. Said it was good to go. No interest what so ever in figuring out the source of the problem. I now realize they may have been interested in having me drive off my clutch warranty...

Second dealership was great. Faulty slave cylinder is their best guess. I have a new clutch, and am waiting to get the paperwork (I picked it up on Saturday when service was closed) to see what else had to be replaced.

Nervous about where this is going. Hoping I'm not repeating JP18's experience.....

I'm also at a bit of a loss as to what my clutch is 'supposed' to feel like. The burned out one, after being bled, was quite stiff and had a distinct 'snap' back to starting position. The new one feels softer, more like how I was used to the old one feeling - but that had air in the line. I'm trying to get a sense of what 'normal' is, so I can ensure I catch any changes early....

Count me in as among the burned. I experienced the pedal to floor 6k miles into owning my JLU Rubi. Jeep towed it in and replaced the clutch, slave cylinder and the ignition. 6mo after that (today) I dropped the car at the dealership because the clutch is slipping, vibrating, and generally feels bad. I am at 10,250 miles. I was kindly informed by the service department that any additional clutch work will not be covered by warranty as I am 5 days past the one year mark.

What in tarnation?! The clutch is covered under the factory 3 year warranty. Go to another dealer if those bozos think the clutch is only covered for 1 year.

Mine slave cylinder took a dump when I was snow wheeling. Went to shift, and clutch never came back up. Dealer swapped it for me without issue, but itā€™s curious that it also happened in the cold.

Fast-forward. My second gear has since frequently been popping out of position, particularly when shifting from 3 to 2 or when in a deceleration, trying to slow down with 2 from a neutral position.

Itā€™s going in this week, but Iā€™ve already got 40k miles on it... so we shall see what they cover/donā€™t cover.

That slave cylinder should not be considered a wear item, so I'd be shocked if they don't cover it.
