Just regeared my 2021 JLUR 3.6 to 5.13 at a very reputable shop about a month ago. Right after the regear, on the way home I noticed this rotational click noise when coasting between 8-10 mph. It is very obvious when stopping for a traffic light. It happens when the speed slows down to 10 mph. I took the Jeep back to the shop. They inspected the ring and pinion and said everything was ok and it was likely caused by spider gear and some Jeeps are just like that. This never happened before the regear. Everything else was fine with the driving except the noise. Should I be concerned?

Here is a video of the noise. It can be heard at 5 and 10 seconds mark.

That could be caused by a few things.

Pinion depth
Pinion race not pressed in all the way (if they even replaced them)
Pinion nut didn’t crush the sleeve to reach PTQR
Lateral movement in the carrier. (Not enough shim. Which would mean they didn’t reach a good TTQR)

That ain’t right.

Have them show you where they set the backlash with Prussian Blue. Me thinks they haven’t got your backlash set right and if that’s the case, I wouldn’t have much trust in the pinion bearing preload either….

Only seems to happen when slowing down...this a long shot, but you might want to check your pinion agle and insure it with in specs. The pinion nose will go down under deceleration and you could be on the edge of the down degrees.

I have run into this before and the click only showed at low speeds under no power, like coming to a stop. I had just replaced carrier assembly that I had BLOWN up when I made the 1-2 shift at 7200 rpm at the Gator Nationals...back in my racing days. I checked the pinion angle and added a + .5 degree and it fixed it. Not saying this is it and will solve all, but it should checked...no more, no less.

Thanks a lot guys! Appreciate all the advices!

Does pinion angle get changed when regearing? Want to make sure this was caused by regear.

Pinion angle will not cause the noise you're hearing.

No, rehearing will not change the pinion angle. A new axle may do so. High Pinion Vs Low pinion

Sorry for the delayed reply, I took a long weekend.

I talked with the counter guys, they said they've got you coming back into the shop, I'll be here then along with Maxx and we'll get a close look at it.

Sorry for the late update. I have been busy with work. Finally had some time during the holiday break to provide an update here.

Tim and folks at Northridge took a thorough look at my rig in the summer. Tried road testing, took off the diff cover to visually inspect the gears, installed a different rear drive shaft. Finally, we discovered when the rear locker is turned on, the noise went away. So, the conclusion was that it was likely caused by some wear on the spider gear! It should not impact driving much. Afterwards, Tim took me for a tour of his new production studio. Super cool crew and stuff!

2000 miles later, I put on new front and rear ARB diff covers and inspected the gears again. They look and drive great! Thanks so much @Tech Tim , Maxx, and everyone at @Northridge4x4 ! Really appreciate all the help!
