I've seen several threads about click noises as well as squeals on engine start, but I think mine is different. For me, it's a single "click" noise just as the engine turns over and the engine starts up just fine. Not sure if "click" is the description or word I should use. Video HERE. I guess another way I can describe it is that it sounds like something disengaging..? Hard to describe but hopefully the video gives a better idea. The sound seems to be coming from underneath the engine bay.

I noticed that it happens at random times-- it doesn't happen on every engine startup and not always on a cold start (e.g. first startup in the morning after sitting in garage overnight). I've noticed this can happen after being parked for a matter of minutes to a few hours -- again it happens at random. Anyone else getting this on their JLU?

I have the exact sound randomly at startup. I noticed it like a day after owning it. I've compared it to 2 other JLs and they do it too. At least once every 5 cycles. So I just equated it to being normal and thought nothing of it since.

Two other JLs? That's interesting. I came across this thread today. The OP has a 2014 JK with a 3.6L. One poster referred to a transfer case startup check? Sounds interesting as I'm not very familiar with such thing but the noise in his video sounds pretty similar.

That one seems more delayed. I know I never had such a noise on my 2012 JK. Also I've noticed the clunk doesn't ever happen during ESS startup. At least I haven't heard it yet.

Hello,
If you believe your Wrangler is not operating as it should, we would be more than happy to assist should either of you choose to visit the dealer to have this looked into further. If this is something that interest you, please feel free to send our team a PM.

Any updates on this? Mine does the same noise. I would call it more a clunk than a click though.

Thanks.

None yet. I'll bring it up when I take mine to the dealership to fix the cruise control recall (ugh). Hoping to be able to reproduce it while I'm there.

Not exactly a resolution but I've found that during engine start (foot held down on the brake, then hitting the start button), quickly releasing the brake just before the engine turns over seems to keep the click noise from happening. I haven't heard it since.

Back when I was researching what the cause of the noise might be, I read somewhere that it might have to do with how pressing on the brake has something to do with the noise -- not sure how true/relevant that is, but ever since I decided to give it a try, I haven't really heard the noise much. In that same post, the Jeep owner mentioned taking it to the dealer, then the dealer wanted to be able to hear the noise from the outside by using remote start (sure enough, no clicking on remote start/no brake being held down). I really wished I could find that post now..

Well, mine did it last night when I used remote start as I was walking up to the Jeep. I had heard it a time or two before when I was in the vehicle, but hadn't noticed it as much until last night. I may do some testing and take it in to the dealership

Mine does the same but not quite as loud, sounds like it's coming from the undercarriage like the transmission area... still haven't figured it out. I signed for a 2018 Black JL. Right after signing we went to the mall started it up and POP, so we took it back and they switched us out no problem. So we now have a White JL with 8000 miles and now this one too started making the same noise?

I did notice that if I start the engine and move the gear selector from park to drive a couple of times (without actually moving the jeep) then stopping the engine, next start up didnt make the sound again?
