I used to think this as well but a good friend of mine who’s company made precision sensors for manufacturing machines convinced me that the Chinese have surpassed the US and Germany in terms of manufacturing precision, thanks in part to Apple and Tesla who spent billions training them.
There are 2 cases that you get that quality. You pay for it, or its subsidized by the government and being used to push the country forward which their EV and auto industry falls in the latter.

Maybe, but they'll make it from pot metal instead of forged steel.

This is true. In the 20 years that I've been traveling to China, it is astounding to see their progress. Their engineering and manufacturing abilities have easily surpassed ours, save for maybe a few specific areas.

Something I’m less sure of is China‘s commitment to quality consistency. Japan took American teaching (Deming) to heart and built a quality manufacturing culture out of the ashes of WWII. I remember the president of our Japanese office ($50M business) excusing himself from our meeting to travel to a customer site where one of our machines had failed. Nothing was more important to him than apologizing to the customer in person and assuring him the problem would be solved ASAP. I’m not sure China has reached that point yet culturally. They seem to operate with more of the American mindset of profit first.

I keep up with the UK's Overlander 4x4 and 4x4 Australia magazines, and have been following the developing Chinese 4x4 SUV products in those markets. There are multiple Chinese makes that are making inroads in those markets, often outselling Jeep with their much lower prices. They include BYD, GWM and LDV (formerly British). Their reviews indicate the promise of great things at cheaper prices, but the current reality is that they don't perform as well. They're still cheap cars, but it's a good analogy to what Japanese cars were like in the 1970s in the USA. English and Australians still much prefer Ford and Toyota 4x4s. Plus I think the political climate in this country would make Chinese brands problematic.

I do give a lot of credit to the author, Dan Grec, as he has a lot of experience driving overland Jeeps around the world.

Japan is still about acting honorable, whereas China is exactly the opposite. If they don’t know you, they don’t care about you in the slightest. This is why they were exporting children’s toys that had been painted with lead paints.

Jeep pulled out of China after COVID. There is definitely an off-road scene there and local companies are trying to fill the void. Some people there do still import Jeeps into China, as they don't want anything but the real deal. We actually sell and export some of our NXTGEN products to China because of it. The numbers are much smaller now, but some Jeeps do still make it over there.
