Caught in the rain

Hi Everyone,

I was curious if anyone knows exactly how water resistant the interiors of our JL’s are? I’m running my soft top in the summer with no front doors. I got caught in a few rain storms and the carpet got wet, but it dried pretty quickly. Yesterday I got caught in a monsoon. It was great! I was soaked from head to toe on the left side of my body on the way home from work. Between the water falling out of the sky at a tremendous rate and the wheels from the Jeep and other cars water was definitely getting into the interior. Much more than normal. So it got me thinking, how rain/water resistant are our jeeps?

I’m curious if anyone knows, how the electrical is protected? Steering wheel? Dash switches and elements, speakers? If the carpet is truly mold/mildew resistant? Is there anything I need to worry about if the interior gets wet?

I do know if you’re fording water and it gets on the inside of the Jeep you can pull the carpets and use the drain plugs, but for a random rain shower I’m not planning to go through that much work. What do you guys think?

Just be reasonable. If it gets wet, and is going to stay wet, obviously it will mold.

Get wet enough, and your touchscreen will go haywire. Happened to me when I forgot to put the top up before a big thunderstorm. The water seems to confuse the touchscreen itself.

On the upside, everything works fine once it dries out. So we got that going for us.

They are great. I've been through a sideways raining severe thunderstorm that soaked everything, including me. No issues. They put the preproduction JL's through a 24 hour rain simulation. It wasn't a hard rain, but they at least drizzled on everything for 24 hours, according to Mark Allen, the chief designer. They kept the Jeep DNA in these things, for sure. I've been soaked in my JK probably a dozen times or more and it is still doing well. I did swap a Pioneer stereo into it replacing the old Uconnect. I doubt the Pioneer can handle the moisture like that factory unit did, though.

Yes, drying it out is important for this reason, as well as keeping the screen from going crazy. My screen didn't do that, though. I think it may be because I have the Mopar screen protector on it. @BlackRook do you have the screen protector on yours?

I got caught in a big storm last night, no top, no doors, about 4 inches of water on the floor when I got home and pulled the plugs. Everything was working fine as I drove home with the defrost on and the heated seats running. This morning I am putting a big fan in it.

I think the biggest problem is how water resistant your pride is.
I'd hate to be stuck in DC traffic in a major down pour. I'm sure other folks in traffic will be taking pictures of the guy all wet in non-moving traffic to post on their Facebook page. Of course they won't be able to see my smile.

I haven't been caught in a storm yet, but I have left the windows off back and it got pounded overnight at a hotel. I knew it was going to storm, but I wanted to see what the results were with just those windows off. The next morning, it was clear that it was soaked in back along with the backseat. No big deal as I could tell it was going to be a beautiful warm day for it to dry out.

Then, we arrive at our destination (13-year old baseball tournament) and park facing downhill. In just seconds, water was up above my ankles while sitting at the wheel. Obviously, I opened up the plugs and everyone had a pretty good time watching me. But my question is: where did the water come from? There was no standing water in the trunk area, rear passenger area, etc. But it must have collected somewhere. I don't believe it was in the cargo/storage area either, because I remember grabbing my sunflower seeds out of there.

Tis the season. Had hardtop off doors on drove in rain for 30 min everything soaked. I park in garage, so next day I parked in sun. Dried it out, all fine. I think it can handle anything short of submersion.

Now if someone would make a freakin Bikini top I wouldn't have this PROBLEM !!!

My wife just got caught at work in our JK with no top and doors for hours. Probably 4-6" in the tub on the way home. There are 12 drain plugs in the JK (assuming around the same in the JL). Make sure to get the ones in the way back storage area and where the jack is stored.

Oh, and pull the plugs outside of the garage......somehow my wife and daughters didn't think that one through. Still took two nights of fan drying to get the carpet dried.

I got down poured on in my JL with the doors and top off driving to work. Several inches in the bottom of it, the electronis were completely soaked and the dash looked like there was a water hose taken to it. I got home, pulled the drain plugs and took out all of the carpets to lay in my driveway, while they dry. Taking the carpets out only takes 10 minutes, very well designed. My JL is an early 2018 model as well.

A year later, no issues. Jeep still smells new and no electronics problems.

I keep a large bath towel rolled up under the rear seat for when I get caught in the rain, or in the case of last weekend, purposely drive through a waterfall (on the fiances side), and give the interior a quick wipe down after.
