Car smells like rotten eggs occasionally

Hi!

It’s been a couple of months now that, every once and then, I get the smell of rotten eggs come through the cabin. I find it occurs after going up a hill and applying a bit more throttle, but this is not something I can replicate all the time. I’ve booked a time with the service department later in October, but I was hoping you could shed some light into what might be possible root causes, so I have something to ask the technicians to check. I have a 2023 JLUR 3.6 Auto with 15,000km fully stock.

Are there other cars in front of you when it happens? It could be someone in front of you who doesn't have their catalytic converters anymore?

My Jeep also smells bad when I “apply a little more throttle.” The trick is to make sure you only generate a gas, and not a liquid or solid.

While my Jeep was in for service the shuttle driver ran me to my office in a Pacific. The smell was extremely obnoxious and I asked the driver WTH. Common with failing auxiliary batteries he said. They just couldn’t get it in for service as they were backed up!

You have my attention. I have also experienced that egg smell in my cabin and have wondered if that was my vehicle or some other vehicle nearby. I also think it may have been after an acceleration event and it has now occurred twice over the last six months.
Currently driving a 2021 Rubicon XR with 3.6L Etorque, automatic trans. with approx. 29,000.

I thought of it initially, but ruled it out. It’s definitely my Jeep

I have had a battery leak and smell like sulfur when the acid escapes. Check both batteries main and aux…

I would make sure you're experiencing this without any other vehicles around before chasing it. Normally you won't smell your own failed cat unless you were walking behind it, and you'd get a DTC well before it failed usually.

Could be overheating batteries as well, they have a very unique smell that is almost like rotten eggs. They'd continue smelling well after you turned the vehicle off, however. Easy to tell that way.

How is the A/C working? A rotten egg interior smell can occur when refrigerant leaks.
