'22 Wrangler Sport. When I'm stopped and no matter what gear I'm in, I cannot shift my Wrangler from 2 wheel drive to 4 high. No matter how much I pull the shifter back, it won't move. However, if the Jeep is moving, it shifts just fine. With my last Wrangler, a 97 TJ, it could shift with no problems when stopped. I went through the owners manual, and it says that it can be shifted to 4WD from 0 to 45 MPH. Am I doing something wrong? This is my first JL, so any tips are appreciated. Thanks.

It should shift into it just fine into 4 HI with the same effort stopped vs rolling. I know that 4 LOW can be a little hard to do, especially if it hasn't been used much. Maybe something similar for your jeep? How much has 4WD been used. It should improve with use.

Mine goes in hard sometimes setting still too. May be the position of the gears in the t-case at the time.

I'm not sure how much 4WD has been used as I just got the Jeep. I got it used, it's a 2022 with 20k miles.

I thought I read in the manual that it is recommended to be moving with transmission in gear when going from 2H to 4H. 4H to 4L, transmission needs to be in neutral and the vehicle moving under 5mph. I have a 21 Rubicon, so not sure if different than the sport.

Would the manual's instructions change on this point from year to year between your 2021, his 2022, and my 2024? If not, I can easily post scans of my 2024 manuals here if it helps.

And, within a given model year, would this advice change between trim levels? I wouldn't think so because only a single manual serves a given model year, right?

Use it or loose it, kinda applies here . I had a friend who bought a 3 year old Rubicon. It was doing same as yours. I just happen to know the young lady that was previous owner.
Called her up and explained what it was doing. She said beats me I didn't know what the lever did.
So with time , putting it in and out of 4 hi , he put in and out every day .
It goes in stopped now after about 3 months.

The first couple of shifts, I thought I was going to snap the lever off. And that was while moving...should have been a very easy shift from 2H to 4H.

It finally loosened up to where it feels normal after ~25 shifts or so.

With only 20k miles on the OP's rig, it's possible 4wd wasn't used much or at all and just needs to be broken in..

While we're on the subject, I can't figure out why my Rubi's transfer case grinds when shifting from 4L back into 4H. Trans is an automatic. I come to a complete stop. Shift trans to neutral. Move transfer case lever from 4L to neutral. Then, moving it from N to 4H, it grinds. I've tried shifting to park and then back to trans neutral before shifting to 4H. I've tried a little motion. Nothing can stop it from a little grind/clash going back into 4H. What the heck?

None... but it pays well.
I have the same issue with my 2019. It wasn't used much off road in its life Yes it will fight you for a good amount of shifts.

Joshua, while stopped and breaking-in the transfer case for 4H, try putting your transmission in neutral first.

This question gets posted a lot, it won't shift easily stopped but works fine if moving, what to do? Shift it while it's moving the next 5-10 times you use 4wd and viola it shifts easier.

When I first bought my Rubicon I can tell the previous owner had never used the transfer case. It took it awhile to get worked in going slow and shifting into 4high and back into 2high... It gets easier the more you do it. Once you've done it a few times it should be able to do it stopped without an issue but for some reason when they're brand new and never been used they don't like to do it at zero speed. I also confirmed this on a 2024 Wrangler sport with only 4 miles on it. It would not shift into 4high sitting still no matter how hard you pulled the handle back.

As has been said a few times it works best moving. I will usually be rolling 5-10mph and put the trans in neutral and pull back to 4hi ... same with 4L. The first few times will be hard but it gets easier with use ... like other things in life.

Yes pull on it with a sense of purpose. It won’t break.
