Getting ready to renew the registration and noticed I’m being required to pay a state certified tech to connect their computer to the ODB port for 2 minutes and give me a “smog certificate” before my renewal can be considered complete.

It’s been less than 2 years since taking delivery

Just a heads up to other CA diesel owners that there are “no model year exemptions” for diesel-powered vehicles.

Except that they note the following exemption just below that
  • Diesel-powered vehicles that are model-year 1997 and older.
So ??‍♂ there IS a model year exemption! Pretty lame they didn’t notice that mixed message.

Just a heads up to fellow new diesel owners. Even though we have on board systems effectively washing the exhaust fumes, our vehicles are being watched very closely. At least it’s not every year.

There are some in that state that are going to do whatever they can to get rid of ICE, gas and diesel alike. Adding more fees and tests, anything to increase the burden on cost of ownership to the point no one wants one. Best of luck! :fingerscrossed:

The first year for the OBD system requirement on diesel vehicles was 1997 and 1996 for gas vehicles. So it is kind of a given that a vehicle without an OBD system would be except from a test that requires an OBD system.

Coronado, San Diego County here. ‘21 JLURD registration renewal arrived, today.
No requirement for smog; anticipated as much based on your post. Couple of questions, if you don’t mind (1) did you purchase your diesel JL in California? (2) was the smog requirement included with your renewal mailer or delivered separately? (3) did your dealer perform Y81 emission recall? I believe diesel smog ‘spot’ checks occur statewide, regardless of manufacturer. Likely, my turn to smog will come next year or soon after. Sorry your [still new diesel] got flagged.

1998 and newer diesel vehicles have been required to test every 2 years since 2010. They do not have the 8 model year exemption that gas vehicles do.

It sounds like California is trying to eliminate Diesels, or they are delusional in their thinking that they are the cause for all their pollution.

California is delusional in almost every way you could possibly imagine, and it seems they're trying to eliminate anything that doesn't run off of a battery. As it is, I need to wait until I go to Arizona next month to pick up another Honda 2000 generator as they are no longer sold or shipped here.

Just saw this old post. Bought my diesel March 2022 and I just paid the registration. And now I got a letter in the mail for smog.went to smog shop. He said I have to drive it for 60 miles for the monitor to be ready. As I replaced the battery last week. It erased all the info. So my question is how do I get it up to speed ? He said you have to drive it in a certain way so the monitors get ready for smog. … I’ve heard 60mph steady without stops … anyone know the is procedure ?

i just went through this with my 1998 silverado. had recently jumped the battery after it died. i drove it multiple nights trying to follow the procedure to get the last two monitors to turn on. it wasnt working. i finally had my wife drive it to work two days in a row. about 60 miles each way. that did it. stop and go traffic finally got the last one to turn on. for that year, the early OBD2, CA allows you to have one monitor not turn on. for newer OBD2, i believe its only the evap monitor.

order one of these little gadgets, there are various versions
https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Sc...1712432755&sprefix=elm+327+obd,aps,324&sr=8-7

then download an app. i use Dash Command ($10). on your phone or tablet you can see in real time what ALL your monitors, guages, etc are doing. i used it to see when all my monitors turned on so it could pass smog. my truck didnt pass a few weeks ago and they gave me one week to come back for a free re-test. i forgot about this little gadget and used it to see when all the monitors came back on. that way i wouldnt have to drive to the smog shop for them to check, and waste both of our times.
and no, Autozone doesnt have the scanner to check monitors. they said they dont even sell anything.

i also used that device for my mustang when i took it to the track. i could monitor all the temps in real time. it shows you a LOT of info.

there's a free app you can use but its not as user friendly, especially while youre drving.

Don't watch when the MOG MONKEY runs your engine up against the governor while he's watching the exhaust for "excessive" smoke. I used to live in CA, and I had to laugh that they left the definition of "excessive smoke" up to the individual doing the test. I hated hearing my Powerstroke RPM at full throttle.

The big diesel powered vehicles are required to have an "opacity test" that is done with a machine, not just some goofballs judgement. If CARB is going to require tests on small diesel engines, they shoud be required to use the same criteria that the use on the big rigs.

At the very least they should provide the smog guys with this old school technology.

Sadly, I was going to drop the v6 for a new 23 Deisel this very week. Until I spoke with three service writers and one mechanic, and watched a tech doing a YouTube on the v3 3.0. All said avoid the 3.0 like the plague.

I can live with bad pumps and egr, def issues, I couldn’t get past the basic diesel design flaws, biggest being the smaller main journals, fixed by Stellantis by changing tranny and engine software to not shift as hard or lug the engine. Essentially, the 3.0 has a poorly designed short block, you can’t fix that or have an aftermarket work around.

The other eco Deisel manufacturers? They increased the journal sizing. Then, Stellantis long term fix, kill the eco diesel forever.

v6 for a few more years, then I’m not sure.
