I have a 2021 Sport S 4 door. I am replacing the tires with Toyo Open Country AT3 P285/70/R17 and keeping the stock rims. No lift. I'm going with the dealership because they have a buy 3 get 1 for a $1.

I want to obviously get the 5th tire and put on the gate as a spare. Their invoice has 3 items on there. They said that it is needed to support the heavier tire on the hatch and to realign the 3rd brake light.

82215355AC Carrier: Tire - OUTS - 306D $310
82215356AB Carrier: Tire - OUTS - 123B3 $715
82215349AB: CHMSL: Tire - 123A2 - $88

I'm wondering if these are needed as the person sounded a bit unsure.

If so, I may have to just get 4 tires and keep the smaller tire for now and just cover it so it doesn't look stupid. If I did that, would it be a big problem if I got a flat and put a smaller tire on in one spot if I had to drive to short distances?

With a smaller tire, physically you can only use 2WD. Electronically could be a problem. Traction and Stability control will be freaking out thinking that the tire is constantly slipping. I've never had a smaller tire on my JL so I don't know exactly what will happen but I'm pretty sure the Jeep electronics will freak out because of what will come from that wheel speed sensor.

it's definitely not something you want to do and I'm not sure if you can get away with it as a temporary limp home.

No!!! That tire weighs less than the Falken MT factory option. IF the 285/70/17/C won’t fit get Teraflex relocation brackets (~$150) featherweight aluminum, moves stock tire setup up 2”, easy install, no sensor issues. Works perfect for my 35/12.50/17/C 59lb AT3’s. $1000 attempted Rip Off!!! Edit— IF the 3’rd brake light isn’t high enough move it up to the top screws leaving the bottom ones unused. I got a Quadratec PNP light ring and eliminated the stock one. Edit— price Plus Labor? easy ~ $400. Also, IF the 3rd brake light won’t slide to the top holes you just separate it and move the wire to the inside of the screws, simple.

I'd be looking for a more honest dealer.
