If you want all the hard to get stuff for above "market value" you all can just give me a list. There is a store in the mall (Fayette Mall - Lexington KY) that has literally everything impossible to get. All at astronomical prices. I don't think he has sold one bottle. It is his personal collection but he figures if someone has money to burn and pays a ridiculous price he will sell.

The thing is, everyone has a limit of how far above suggested retail they they’re able or willing to pay. I’ll pay $45, maybe $50 for ER. I won’t pay $75. I’ll pay $90 for Blanton’s. I won’t pay $125. Others who value it more would gladly pay those higher prices.

I noticed this week my regular store that sometimes sells me allocated bottles at suggested retail has started bundling stuff. And adding a $40 surcharge per basket. Good marketing. I’ll ask the manager if they’re willing to let me choose what goes in the bundle so I can pick things I want rather than random stuff I have no use for. Win-win.

Oh man!!! Look at that!! And you pay less than $50 a bottle??!! Clearly I live in the wrong part of the country! I’ve never seen 4 bottles together even in a store.

It used to be 6 bottles together! Stuff is just too good to not drink...

MSRP is ~$45. I paid a bit more for each of those, but nowhere near $700! A friend used to run a location of a local liquor store chain. That chain thankfully has a policy of not marking up allocated spirits. You just have to know someone to get access to them.

So, whenever he got the good stuff in, he'd let my buddy and me know. We'd go into the back with him, pick 1-2 bottles each (never abuse the situation!), and then buy one bottle for him as well. So, I paid 1.5x the cost of the bottle to keep the relationship strong. Each of those cost me between $80-100. SO much nicer than $700 for one!

Sadly, that friend found he didn't like the hours associated with running a liquor store (nights & Saturdays) and moved out of the job...

My local store that I patronize has gone through 4 managers in the last couple of years that I’ve been going there. I have to keep reestablishing that relationship every time. I’m certain that at some point they’ll get someone in there who doesn’t care and just wants to hook up their friends or get bribed in order to sell allocated bottles.

They work horrible hours and it doesn’t pay much. The poor girl who’s in charge now is sweet, but she’s there by herself often because it’s a crappy job that nobody wants. It’s not that “people don’t want to work anymore” like I keep hearing unenlightened people saying. It’s that nobody’s willing to work for poverty wages and have to work every night and weekend. I wouldn’t do it. She wants to move out of state because Texas has no state minimum wage so the $15K a year isn’t attracting anyone who gives a crap to work there. So I may have to do it all over again soon unless the owners wise up and start paying more to attract and retain good employees.

Tell her to pack her shit and get out here to California. $48K from the state to sit at home and not work. Free needles to shoot up with. Free crack pipes to get lit up with. Hell, if she’s an illegal she’ll even get free health care.

Is there seriously any place that pays an annual salary of $15K? Almost seems unreasonable.
Out here the Golden Arches and In N Out start you out at $17 an hour.

Yeah, this is a great thread that we’re not going to derail with politics. If my post started you down that path, my apologies because that’s not my intent.

She said that they pay minimum wage which is still $7.25. Extrapolated at 40 hrs a week for 52 weeks that’s $15,080 annually. My point was that it sucks to have a revolving door for employees because they don’t retain people and I have to keep building a relationship with each successive manager.

Back on topic, she said she’ll call me if they get any Rock Hill Farms or Elmer T. Lee but that’s rare and she may quit and move back up north.

?
Sorry you misunderstood. I’ve been on this thread a long time and have never seen politics mentioned. I too would enjoy keeping this particular thread staying that way, although I don’t believe many bourbon drinkers are so fragile that they can’t enjoy a good friendly debate also.
However, nothing I mentioned had squat to do with politics. It was simply a factual observation and trying to help out a fellow inhabitant of earth. I pointed out that there are a ton of high paying jobs available out here for those willing to work. And that also for those not willing to work, you can be paid $48K to not do so.
Not sure how you misinterpreted, but drink on my friend.??

Yeah, turnover makes it difficult to maintain the relationships. I've had some great success building relationships with folks who own their own liquor stores (not manage a chain location). I get the good stuff, but I'm not getting it anywhere close to MSRP.

One guy is really open with his books, shows me costs, shows me the hoops he has to jump through to get some stuff from the distributors... it's all crazy. He'll always beat the big chains by at least $10 on stuff and we find out what he makes margin on and buy some of that as well to keep the flow uninterrupted.

For you distinguished gentlemen amongst our fine group of Jeepers: National Bourbon Day

Was really looking forward to doing some of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail when I picked up my Jeep at Gupton but ended up ordering from Idaho since it was only 1/2% difference.
I’ll make it over that way eventually.
