Hey! Just getting started, and I'd like some opinions on what a recovery kit looks like. I see people talking about "bring your recovery kit" but not sure what the contents of said kit should be. Straps, shackles and then?

I too am just getting started in a Jeep (1 year owner of a JLUR). A few years of off road experiance however... Here is what I carry, but best advice is to get an extinguisher, first aid kit, tools (see other threads), radio, and ride with others first.

Regarding recovery, have yours to use if you get stuck, and help others if they do. This is what I carry (Bubba Rope, Factor 55, ARB):
  • Tree Saver - 8ft
  • Soft Shackles (I carry two and one heavy duty)
  • "D-Rings" (2) - 3/4"
  • Tow Strap (not a kinetic rope)
  • Short Straps (used if needed for those without connection points etc.)
  • Kinetic rope (not a tow strap)
  • Snatch Block and Rope Retention Pulley
  • Good gloves / leather palms
  • Winch line damper (saftey and dampens line if snapped)
  • Jack (bottle for me and scissor as I want a hi-lift but like the ARB "Jack" and want a Safe Jack)
  • Make sure all have load limits for each type of use
Best to look up, watch and read to ensure 1) the right load levels, 2) how to use, 3)quality gear (but wallet may say otherwise, some better than none). Also find out if there is a local off road club, many have recovery training etc.

Lots of info...

I've been just slowly adding gear as I can. Still need to acquire a snatch block, tree saver, and maybe a kinetic rope. Otherwise, have everything that @maddscot listed. I do need to get some sort of jack. I don't want a high lift though and would rather invest in an ARB Jack.

This is my "Recovery Build List". Start with a Winch, of course.

Indentions indicate buying together.

I went through the complete packages that Factor 55 and others had, and sorted through what I thought I'd actually need based on what I do and plan to do.

This is what I came up with. YMMV.
