It's blowing in the wind. it indicates movement. Most all aircraft are like this also. Starboard flag is most always backwards looking. Look at airliners.

Saw an upside down flag recently on a truck. At first I thought it may be by accident, but after I did an internet search apparently not. That was the first time I ever remember seeing one like that.

One of my pet peeves. Watching a movie and seeing military or law enforcement uniforms with the flag displayed incorrectly. Even seeing LE in the real world with incorrectly oriented flag patches. I know I sound like a triggered Boomer.

I always make sure my flags are facing the right way but I know that not everybody knows so I try to let it slide. If a reasonable opportunity presents itself I'll educate the party involved to let them know the deal but otherwise I don't mess with it. Civilians don't always know what's what.

I pick apart military movies too much to enjoy them sometimes. I hate seeing glaring obvious mistakes that even a young NCO could have corrected.

My jeep is always moving forward not retreating so both sides stars face forward

Obviously, you can do whatever you want. However, proper flag etiquette dictates that the blue field should be on the right when displayed as a decal on the right side of a vehicle (bus, truck, plane, etc.) and when worn as a patch on the right arm.

The side of the flag that is attached to the pole is called the Hoist, and it's considered the "front" of the flag. The back side is called the Fly. A flag always advances, so the hoist will always face forward. It may look odd, but it's correct.

My understanding was the military wears it with the union facing the direction of travel to signify heading into battle as opposed to retreating.
you are correct for the right shoulder flag. The union is intended to be forward as if you are carrying the flag into battle.
