This is true but in some designs it also holds the bearing togetherThe "wheel bearing" is a unitized hub, these days. Has been for many years.
The "nut" holds the axle in its lateral position so the axis of the stub axle U-joint is in line with the knuckle balljoints. If the nut isn't present, the axle can migrate inboard a small amount and some bind the U-joint. The axles cannot come outboard.
